I managed to get up to London last week and to the British Library. There
they were able to look up my borrowing record for 2007 without delay and the
book I was seeking is
Recueil des rouleaux des morts (VIIIe sie’cle – vers
1536); Publie’ sous la direction de Jean Favier par Jean Dufour. [5 vols?]
(Paris: Diffusion de Boccard, MMV – )
According to the preface to vol 1, a five vol set was envisaged with the
final volume containing indices, facsimiles, expanded notes &c &c but as
far as the BL is concerned, only 3 vols seem to have been published. I think
Jean Dufour died in 2014.
My problem with the BL on line catalogue was that I tried using keywords in
Latin and English whereas this book was indexed using the French terms and the
terms had not been translated. (ROULEAUX not cross indexed to ROLLS or ROTULI )
I didn’t think of using French .....
Which goes to show that the preservation of borrowing records has its uses;
but I recall from my own days as a librarian that there were considerable
reservations when electronic recording was introduced as to whether to preserve
borrowers’ records. Was this an invasion of privacy or not? and fears were
expressed that unscrupulous future government departments might make such
information a tool of tyranny.
I am deeply grateful that the wiping of borrower’s records is NOT BL
policy!

Several
years ago while I was working in the British Library I came across a set of
volumes that had recently been published (say since 1990) which consisted of an
examination and a transcription of a number of Obituary Rolls (rotuli /
commemoration rolls ) – they go by different names but were the death notices
carried from monastery to monastery following the death of an abbot. Every abbey
where the Obituary Roll rested and celebrated a requiem mass also added a
tribute to the roll. This work transcribed several rolls belonging to “France”
in the 10, 11 & 12 centuries and included maps and traced the routes and
identified the connections between the originating monastery and those
selectively visited.
Unfortunately
I cannot now find my reference and an attempt to identify it in the BL catalogue
through subject or keyword has proved negative. Dose anyone recognise the work
from this fuzzy description and if so can they give me enough of a citation to
find it in the BL.
I
hope to be in London next week.
(The
really famous obit. roll is that of the Blessed Vital of Savigny where the
contribution made by Argenteuil may plausible be in the hand of Heloise. This is
NOT one of the items in the publication I am seeking.)
