medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Returning for a moment to the subject of St John the Baptist in Adel, let me add a somewhat TANnish memory. Those who have been in this church in the past few years will have noticed the new light fixtures installed in the nave in 2012:

Their predecessors, said to have been installed in the 1950s by a vicar who had been persuaded that these would constitute a great economy, were ugly contraptions: open wirework cones several feet long, narrow at the top and broadening as they descended, over which there ran a number of thick black electrical cables of two different lengths -- one length reaching the middle of the cones and one reaching the bottom --, each cable terminating in a broader black socket from which protruded a fairly largish downward-hanging light bulb.

One morning some years ago I entered the church as a volunteer from the parish (not the churchwarden but almost certainly a member of the Parochial Church Council) was giving a tour of the interior. Very shortly she got on to the subject of the lights: how ugly they were and how unsuitable, how the parish had been studying alternatives, and how a group of them (not including her) would be going to France in a few months to view newly installed lighting in a medieval church of similar dimensions. She stopped, we gazed up at the light fixtures in silence, and then, coming up with an analogy natural to someone who has been country bred, I asked, "Do you know what a milking machine looks like?". Whereupon she smiled broadly, gave me light slap on the cheek, and exclaimed, "That's what we all think!"

Adel is suburban now but there are still some farms there (though, Gordon, you may not be pleased to learn that the large fields just north of the church now sprout some 45 executive homes rather than the former corn) and of course there used to be more. Still, it won't be long before it becomes difficult to find parishioners who know what a milking machine looks like.

Best,
John Dillon

Ah, Boddington Hall! I was never a resident, though I graduated from Leeds 52 years ago this year! I well remember many evenings spent with friends in Boddington Hall!

I've been to services at Adel before Boddington closed & liked it as a functioning parish.

Just so. Though since the university closed Bodington Hall a few years back the International Medieval Congress is now held at the university's main campus just north of the Inner Ring Road, putting Adel rather well out of convenient walking distance.

Another way in which people come to discover this church is through visits to the garden at York Gate:
http://www.gardenvisit.com/garden/york_gate_garden
http://perennial.org.uk/garden/york-gate-garden/
York Gate is on Back Church Lane just SSE of the church grounds. An unpaved lane up to the church starts from the north end of the verge across the road from York Gate itself.

Best again,
John Dillon
