Dear Colleague

Back in February (where have the last eight weeks just gone?!), I asked whether any library teams were doing anything for “special event days”.  Thanks for the responses (from Y&H, NE & LIHNN) – I’ve put them altogether below.  I’ve also enclosed the text of the email that I circulated on World Book Day.

With regard to Learning at Work Week (16th – 22nd May), we intend to have a display of books to support studying, amend our email signature to promote the week, and also provide a link to a stored search on our library catalogue of relevant books.

With best wishes

Helen

In the past we have done the 6 book challenge: http://readingagency.org.uk/adults/quick-guides/reading-ahead/

It was tied in with Learning & Development and targeted at lower banded staff and foreign nursing cohorts.  We left it open to all library users though.  Poor return rate, L&D liked it, but didn’t feedback properly.  We haven’t had the funds to do again.

We have just been accepted for World Book Night this year. http://worldbooknight.org/

We work with the volunteers to distribute and Comms to promote and they are doing some feedback forms for us this year.

We haven’t done anything specific with Learning at Work (think Learning & Development do more), occasionally there has been a trust event with stalls we have engaged in.

Not come across Academic Book Week before – we are tied in with the University of Chester, so it could work quite well.

Collections – we hold some of the Books on Prescription, Quick Reads, Pictures to Share & Mood boosting books and run promotions on them

We are having a book sale to mark World Book Day.  As regards Learning at Work Week we will be doing what we have done for the last three years i.e. have stands in the Library with reps from the local college, WEA, Vocational Training, Mandatory Training and Learning and Development.  We  have also used a company called Tribal who provided free courses (usually level 2) on popular subjects like dementia and nutrition. Unfortunately they have finished now and we are in touch with a company called Yorkshire and Humber Group.  Don't know as yet what they can offer.  Never done anything for Academic Book Day.

World Book Day and Academic book day wouldn’t really be relevant to us as we don’t really have books although I might put something on our conversation boards to encourage people to read books

Learning at work week, I haven’t seen any publicity for but it might be something we could use to encourage people to use lessons learnt

The only other thing which isn’t on your list is NHS Change day, I intend to do something for that

World Book Day 3rd March: Book Swap
// Librarians' Blog for Medicine, Dentistry and Health

Got any old textbooks you don't want?  Want to read something new?

Come to Western Bank Library on Thursday 3rd March, and help us celebrate World Book Day with our first ever Book Swap.

Bring your old books and swap them for something new, or just help yourself to the second hand books available.  There will be everything from textbooks to novels, and whilst you don't have to swap a book to take one, the more you bring, the better it'll be.

The Book Swap runs from 10:00am - 2:00pm upstairs in Western Bank Library and it would be great to see you there!

At York/Scarborough two members of staff have successfully applied to be involved in World Book Night on the 23rd April.  We are planning to have events at both sites on Friday 22nd April to give away the books and we’re also thinking of purchasing a mood boosting collection of books to be promoted at the same time.

In Bradford we used to buy the "Quick Reads" (I believe they were called) and make them available free in the library for anyone to grab.  Part of reading agency project and I think it was linked in some way to adult literacy week or some such

We funded it with SSLDF monies in the days when it was easier to get hold of them.

Needless to say it was popular and we managed to get some secretaries and admin staff who wouldn't normally use the service in to grab a book - we obviously took the opportunity to let them know what else was available at the same time

Today is World Book Day.  For those of us with young children, it means the annual challenge of “what costume does my small child need to wear to school” – but it is also a good opportunity to remind you of the books that the LCH Library holds.

The library at Stockdale House is only small, but we do have easy access to the book-stock of LTHT, LYPFT and the Public Health Resource Centre via our library catalogue.  You can search the catalogue by topic, author or book title, or you can choose from one of the reading lists, covering topics such as coaching reflective practice and communicating with patients.  We also have a set of moodboosting books and Books on Prescription (including books on dementia).

To borrow a book you do not physically need to come to Stockdale House – just send us an email, or complete our online form, and we’ll send the books to you, wherever you are based.

In addition, we have a set of electronic books available.  You can search for the books that we own via our library catalogue (tick the box to search only electronic resources) or with your NHS Athens account, you can search EBL and request access to titles that we may not currently hold.

And if the title you require isn’t available locally or electronically, we can always request it from another library for you.

We often say that the library is “more than just books”, but today is a good chance to remind you that we have access to books too!

Dear all

I’m trying to find out on behalf of the pan Leeds Libraries Project Team whether any of you have been involved in any of the initiatives below or if you have anything planned for the coming year.

  • World Book Day (I know there has been some correspondence about this already)
  • Learning at Work Week
  • Academic Book Day
  • Or any other similarly themed event

Gil Young is asking a similar question for me to the LIHNN and NE librarians, and I’ll collate all the information I received together.

With many thanks

Helen
