Hi all
Just to let you know if you aren't already aware the BNF changed the whole architecture layout of the BNF online and in print in September 2015. This means the print version 71 sept 2015 is significantly different to print 70 and all earlier versions. It was done as the print chapter headings didn't work for online layout. It has caused significant problems in the pharmacy world as BNF chapter headings are used across the NHS in computer prescribing systems.

In the process of transition a number of serious errors crept into the print edition 70 of BNF and the 2015 version of BNF for children. These were quickly rectified online but has necessitated stickers to be produced and applied to BNF 70 print. BNF 71 was published in March and errors have been corrected.

There are two points here:
1. Online versions should always be used wherever possible as the most up to date version
2. It wouldn't be helpful if students became familiar with the layout of any editions earlier than 70 as it has all changed for subsequent versions

I imagine the students are experiencing the same frustrations already felt by pharmacists and doctors .....

Hope this is helpful
Regards

Thanks Alison

This is a good point. A couple of people have contacted me saying they will ask their pharmacy if we can have an old copy. If we are allowed to have a copy or 2 then we would make sure that there was a large sticker on the cover stating that it was an old edition for demonstration purposes, prescribing guidelines may have changed and always to check with the latest edition- happy to go with whatever wording was required.

I’ll wait to see if anyone manages to retrieve a copy for us :)

Best Wishes

Beryl

Hi Beryl,

In order to avoid prescribing errors and keep information up to date we are always asked to return old copies to our Pharmacy dept as soon as the new ones are distributed - if you find older copies hard to track down it might be because other Trusts also have similar rules…

Subject: Old editions of the BNF ?

Hi
Sorry me again! One of those days.

Can I ask if anyone has an older edition print copy of the BNF that they could let us have? Not ancient but a few editions back should be fine :)

Our medical students have access online via NICE Evidence but we have recently been getting asked for the print copy. They want to see what the information looks like in print as it seems it does look different and some students want to be familiar with both.

As they are not prescribing it doesn’t have to be the latest edition.

So if you are getting or will be getting rid of earlier editions when you get a new copy could you let me know if you are will to let us have one?

Many thanks

Beryl
