Hi all,

I am excited to announce that registration is finally open for the Structural Geology and Tectonics Forum this summer, August 1st thru 3rd, with field trips and short courses two days before and after the main meeting. The SGTF will be at Sonoma State University, in Rohnert Park, CA (about an hour north of San Francisco). We have a number of great field trips and short courses lined up:

Saturday, July 30 - pre-Forum field trips and workshops

Field trip: Highlights of the Franciscan (David Bero, Sonoma State, Christie Rowe & Samantha Carruthers, McGill University). Limit 22; start time 8:00 am.

Field trip: Eastern Northern Coast Ranges (Eldridge Moores, UC Davis). Limit 22; start time 8:00 am.

Workshop: Introduction to Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD): sample preparation and analysis (Matty Mookerjee). Limit 6; start time 10:00 am.

Workshop: New Methods for Creating Admissible Cross Sections (Kurt Burmeister). Limit 24; start time 1:00 pm.

Sunday, July 31 - pre-Forum field trips and workshops

Field trip: Active faulting in the Napa Valley (Alex Morelan and Mike Oskin, UC Davis). Limit 22; start time 8:00 am.

Field trip: Inherited structural complexity and active deformation in the eastern Coast Ranges (Ben Melosh and Bob McLaughlin, USGS). Limit 22; start time 8:00 am.

Workshop: Statistical Treatment of Structural Geology Data (Josh Davis and Basil Tikoff). Limit 24; start time 8:00 am.

Thursday, August 4 - post-Forum field trips and workshops

Field trip: Introduction to the Strabo Data System (Basil Tikoff & Randy Williams, University of Wisconsin). Limit 10; start time 8:00 am.

Field trip: Northern San Andreas Fault Deformation, Point Arena (Matty Mookerjee, Sonoma State). Limit 22; start time 8:00 am.

Workshop: Teaching Structural Geology: use of tablet-based apps for mapping in our undergraduate structure courses. Leader: Larry Malinconico. Limited to 20 participants. Start time 9 am. Optional afternoon session 1-3 pm.

Workshop: Analysis, statistics, and presentation of geological spherical directional data using Orient (Fred Vollmer). Limit 14; start time 8:00 am.

Friday, August 5 - post-Forum field trips and workshops

Field trip: Brewschist IV: Franciscan Complex and brewpubs of Sonoma County (John Wakabayashi). Limit 22; start time 8:00 am.

Field trip: TENTATIVE Geothermal geology, fumaroles and the Geysers (Glenn Melosh). Limit 22; start time 8:00 am.

As well as some very exciting session topics:

· Quantifying rates of slip

· Localization processes within the lithosphere

· Faulting and fluid flow

· Cordilleran tectonics

· Teaching about time and scale

· Development of tectonic microstructures

· Cutting edge research in structural geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and tectonics.

You can find more information about this meeting, including field trip and short course descriptions at our webpage (http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/structure/2016-Forum/index.html). You can also follow the link from this webpage to register <https://tickets.sonoma.edu/Online/bundleSelect.asp?createBO::WSbundlemap=1&BOset::WSbundlemap::seatmap::bundle_id=02FD77F0-8EC3-4520-A40A-589F379A8640> for the meeting and the pre- and post-meeting field trips and short courses. Alternatively you can register by following this link: https://tickets.sonoma.edu/Online/bundleSelect.asp?createBO::WSbundlemap=1&BOset::WSbundlemap::seatmap::bundle_id=02FD77F0-8EC3-4520-A40A-589F379A8640

A few notes about registration: 1) field trips and short courses can fill up quickly, so register right away, 2) the registration software is a repurposing of Sonoma State’s concert ticketing software (which means no surcharge fee), and may seem a little strange at times (square peg, round hole, but it will work). You have to verify your selection twice right in a row (which feels strange) and you will need to create an account. You should probably de-select the “Keep me informed” box unless you want news about concert series at the Green Music Center, and 3) the registration deadline is May 16th.

If you have any difficulty registering you can contact the Ticket Center at SSU at: [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> or 707-664-4246 M thru F from 10am to 6pm.

There are no registration costs for attending this meeting or for participating in any of the field trips or short courses (a really good deal!) thanks to sponsorship by NSF and the Structure and Tectonics Division of GSA. Room and board for staying and eating on the SSU campus is $120/day. The accommodations are very nice (Beaujolais Village<http://www.sonoma.edu/housing/villages/>, click to see more details). Single rooms for everyone with your own private bath in a four-room suite with a common area.

There are some funds available to help offset travel expenses (for US citizens) to attend this meeting for those who do not currently have funding. In fact, there are more funds available this year, because we are able to help subsidize travelers who participate in field trips through another NSF grant. You need to indicate whether you want to apply for these funds when you register.

So, there is really no reason not to register <https://tickets.sonoma.edu/Online/bundleSelect.asp?createBO::WSbundlemap=1&BOset::WSbundlemap::seatmap::bundle_id=02FD77F0-8EC3-4520-A40A-589F379A8640> for this meeting right away! The Structure and Tectonics Forum is a great, new tradition, and we really need to keep it going. We can only do that if people participate. So register <https://tickets.sonoma.edu/Online/bundleSelect.asp?createBO::WSbundlemap=1&BOset::WSbundlemap::seatmap::bundle_id=02FD77F0-8EC3-4520-A40A-589F379A8640> today!

If you have any questions, please feel free to send me an e-mail at: [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

Thanks everyone and sorry for multiple postings.
