Many countries and cultures have moved on from such attitudes and actions, thankfully. They all will, eventually, humanity's default is towards altruism, we will get there in the end, once intolerance and fundamentalism, in all its forms, has been seen off. Watch these TEDs to lift the spirits after that downer, sorry everyone.

Not pretty indeed, but along the lines I was thinking when I read the subject line.

Speaking of child friendly hanging systems... In an exhibition of vernacular furniture in 1982 at Temple Newsam House, there was a very ghoulish item , made in 1828, borrowed from Lancashire County Council, I have the catalogue here, and I quote:
"Hanging chair
Adapted from an old counting house stool by adding a back, arm-supports, arms and castors, the new members being screwed to the original frame. The chair was specially made for Jane Scott of Preston, age 12, who was hanged at Lancaster Castle in March 1828 for the murder of her mother. A disability prevented her from walking to the gallows, so she was strapped into this chair and wheeled to the drop."

Sometimes the truth is not pretty.
