Geopolitics has started a new feature: the Geopolitical Forum.

Geopolitical Forums are guest edited sets of short essays. Together they offer timely and thought-provoking reflections about a geopolitical event, an emerging theme, a particularly influential book, or intriguing methodological tools. The contributions to a forum offer different takes on the topic, for example signaling challenges to our knowledge or contrasting multiple views on the same event while also providing preliminary insights and suggesting new avenues for research. As a collection, the essays should complement each other – for example by discussing different approaches to the same issue or different dimensions of the same topic.

Forums consist of an introduction written by the guest-editor(s) and a number of contributions (between 3 and 6) of 1,500 to 2,000 words. The guest editor(s) should make sure that the introduction sets the stage and properly introduce the essays and their relations to each other. Forums essays are not an attempt to be miniaturized research articles. They should instead make a statement to contribute to ongoing debates in the academic community. Each essay presents a clear argument, provides evidence for its defense (possibly using ongoing research), and addresses a wider audience interested in geopolitics. The essays should also engage with the research literature when applicable. The authors should use the journal referencing style and can features tables, maps or illustrations if it contributes to the argument. We aim to publish a Geopolitical Forum in every volume (once per year) next to regular articles and book review essays.

Proposals for Geopolitical Forums should be submitted to the Forum and Review Editor Reece Jones ([log in to unmask]) in advance to receive approval for the concept. The forum proposal should provide a catchy title, a synopsis of the forum, a list of contributors, and short descriptions of their essays. Upon approval of the proposal, the guest editor(s) are responsible for ensuring that the authors comply with the style of the journal and that the essays fulfill the overarching purpose of the forum. The completed collection, as a single file with references combined at the end, should be sent to the Forum and Review Editor by email. Essays for the forum are then reviewed by the journal’s editors and board members.

Geopolitical Forum proposals are accepted on a continuous basis in order to allow for rapid analysis of current events. However, with only one forum per calendar year, the process is competitive.
