Hi,

I think this statement by BNAC is a bit biased! A person cannot be immune from crimes just because he or she is an academic, journalist, intelligent or if he/she holds a high post! We have seen people from all walks of life and those in high posts all over the world including that of Nepal who are involved in all sorts of corruption and fraud! If CIAA is denying Mr Dixit his rights then it is obviously wrong and it should be condemned but on the other hand as a person of high regard Mr Dixit himself should cooperate with the CIAA and provide necessary evidence to clear his name from the allegation! BNAC, if it is to be considered a voice of academics, should ask both Mr Dixit and CIAA to cooperate to each other not just condemn Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority -CIAA!

Just condemning the act of CIAA sends the wrong signal to the literate community in Nepal and its image will at risk!

With kind regards,

Dear all,

BNAC has issued a press statement expressing serious concern about the arrest of Kanak Mani Dixit by the CIAA in Nepal.  The full statement is as follows. PDF version of the same can be found here

27th April 2016

Statement on the arrest by Nepal’s Commission for the Investigation of the Abuse of Authority of Journalist Kanak Mani Dixit

The Britain-Nepal Academic Council (BNAC) wishes to express its serious concern about the arrest of senior journalist Kanak Mani Dixit and the manner of operation of the Commission for the Investigation of the Abuse of Authority (CIAA), Nepal.

While we support any initiatives against corruption and abuse of authority, we are deeply concerned about the heavy-handedness of the CIAA and the manner in which it has conducted itself in relation to Mr Dixit, who is a highly regarded journalist and a leading civil society figure. If it is the case, as has been reported, that Mr Dixit is being denied access to his lawyer, that is highly regrettable. The CIAA is a crucial body for the future health of Nepal’s institutions, but it should operate within the bounds of the law. It is essential that it be and be seen to be unbiased, transparent, and proportionate in its actions, and, above all, that it be free of all possible accusations of corruption itself.
