Archivist (Civic and Public Records)

Explore York Libraries and Archives

Full time (37hrs per week), permanent

Salary:  £24,874- £28, 062 pa

Closing date: 9am, Tuesday 3rd May 2016

Explore York Libraries and Archives has entered a new era following the £1.6m Heritage Lottery funded York: Gateway to History project.  We’re now looking for an innovative and energetic archive professional who can continue to transform the way we deliver archive and local history services to audiences old and new across our historic city.

Working with our Archivist (Access and Engagement) and colleagues from across Explore York you will take particular responsibility for the development, management and care of over 800 years of York’s civic records.  Dating from 1155 to the present day, the civic archive is regarded as one of the most important and complete in the UK.  As well as being a working business resource for City of York Council, the archive is immensely valuable for historical research and for the support of local communities.  You will continue to catalogue the archive to international standards, working with volunteers to create generous and user friendly ways to discover the collection.  You will also be responsible for the fulfilment of our Public Records responsibilities and for our collections of manorial documents.

Supported by the City Archivist you will contribute towards the annual Archives Access plan, including the scoping and management of externally funded collections and engagement projects up to a value of £100,000.  You will also work with Explore colleagues and learning partners to extend our formal learning offer to adults, children and young people, as part of our programme to increase the profile of the archive across all age groups. You will train and support our frontline staff and volunteers who deliver our public service, equipping them with the skills they need to deliver outstanding standards of customer care and to remove barriers to accessing and understanding archives.

You will hold a recognised archives or related information management qualification and have demonstrable experience of working with a range of archives and audiences.  You will be enthusiastic and imaginative in enhancing access to collections, eager to innovate services that appeal to all parts of our user base from council officers to community activists to visitors.  You will be able to devise new ways to communicate the breadth and depth of a complex collection that currently poses challenges of poor documentation and preservation.

You will be confident in verbal and written presentation, able work collaboratively or independently and to build positive relationships across the networks in which you work.  You will have excellent organisational and time management skills. Experience of large cataloguing projects and of CALM software would also be beneficial.
