Jaipur: A narrow passage opposite the Ajmer bus stand on the JaipurAjmer
road leads to the dilapidated Ajmer Film Library . The ceiling is of
tin, so on a hot summer day , its much hotter within the building than
outside.
The air-conditioning worked till 1986 and then went kaput.
These days, to keep the space cool so that the films are not damaged,
staff run air coolers and splash the floor with water. There are also
ceiling fans, each of which has been whirring for over 30 years.
But
that is not it. There are holes in the ceiling and when it rains water
flows right in. The nitrate rolls require careful maintenance. Rust,
dust and moisture can all ruin them.
