Two Archivist vacancies at University of Surrey

Following a review of the Archives & Special Collections department at the University of Surrey, we now have an exciting opportunity for two archive professionals to join our team. 

The Archives & Special Collections department is part of the larger Library & Learning Support Services (LLSS) and its work includes all aspects of collection care and management, access and researcher services, engagement and promotion.  Key collecting strands include the University’s institutional archive (representing 125 years as an education institution), the varied archive collections of the National Resource Centre for Dance, the E H Shepard Archive (showing the life and work of this treasured illustrator), and a range of smaller special collections many of which support specialist areas of teaching and research within the University. 

The roles will work towards awareness-raising through a range of channels and opportunities, development of use of the collections and contribute to the positive reputational impact of the department and University. 

 

Archivist (Collections Management)

Full time (36 hrs per week), permanent

Salary:  £30,738 – £37,768 pa

We are looking for an experienced Archivist to take the lead on day-to-day elements of collection management and care for our varied archives and special collections. You will provide guidance on professional archive practice, ensure progression of collections processing and accessibility for a range of audiences, work closely with team members to consider priorities across Archives & Special Collections and contribute to the strategic development of the department. 

You will have responsibility for the Axiell CALM database and you will supervise the work of other staff working on the collections, including management of the Archives & Special Collections Assistant.  As part of a small team, you will participate in the public services of the department and will support activities and events which draw on the archives such as exhibitions and symposia.

You should be passionate about archives and be an effective communicator.  You must hold a post-graduate Archive Management/Administration qualification and have demonstrable experience of working in roles which have progressed your professional knowledge and practice. You will have excellent IT skills, preferably with knowledge of CALM, knowledge and experience of applying Copyright and Data Protection regulations for archive collections and an understanding of using archives to support outreach and engagement activities.  You should have experience of managing staff or volunteers.

You should be able to work both independently or collaboratively, be able to plan and manage your workload yet be flexible and adapt your approach to respond to the conflicting demands of a small and diverse department.

Archivist (Public Services)

Salary:  £25,769 - £29,847 pa

We are seeking an experienced archive or information professional to manage the public services provided by the Archives & Special Collections department, with a particular emphasis on researcher and public liaison in support of both internal users and visiting researchers. The Archivist (Public Services) will lead the provision of an efficient and effective enquiry service, manage researcher access to collections and other user services including Research Room supervision, reprographics and licencing services.

Aiming to increase the profile of the unique resources held and the activities undertaken, you will co-ordinate the web presence of the department and take the lead on promoting our diverse archives and special collections and initiatives through social media channels and other relevant mediums.  You will contribute to the Archives & Special Collections expanding outreach and engagement work through input into and delivery of inductions, tours, presentations, displays/exhibitions and through other appropriate activities. You will also undertake cataloguing projects in liaison with the Archivist (Collections Management), helping to progress availability of our collections.

Often the first point of contact for the department, it is essential that you are committed to a client-focused service approach and have outstanding customer services skills. You should have a postgraduate qualification in Archive Management/Administration or other relevant information professional qualification, as well as a number of years’ experience in an archive or information environment, demonstrating development of appropriate professional skills and knowledge. You should have excellent IT skills, preferably with experience of CALM and HTML software, and experience of developing and editing web content and using social media for business.  

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required for interacting with a broad range of clients and colleagues and you must be able to work both independently and collaboratively and be able to adapt your approach to a range of different users and audiences.  You should also be able to identify ways of enhancing service provision and as well as seeking opportunities for outreach, engagement and profile-raising.
