Applied Statistician - Research Assistant or Research Associate

Research Assistant: £25,023 - £28,982
Research Associate: £28,982 - £37,768

We seek to appoint a talented applied statistician to a new interdisciplinary research programme in population health and genomics. The post holder will analyse data from a major randomized trial and subsequent longitudinal study of 50,000 blood donors in the UK. Analyses will involve applying and adapting statistical methods for longitudinal data and handling missing data in baseline and longitudinal measures. The research focuses on the health consequences of blood donation, based on longitudinal data on haematological variables, haemoglobin and other iron biomarkers, and health outcomes. Findings from the study will have major implications for blood donation policies in the UK and internationally. A further goal is to develop and evaluate novel targeted (“personalised”) strategies to promote the health of blood donors, while maintaining the nation’s blood supply.

The post holder will contribute to reports, presentations and publications based on this work. He/she will also collaborate with other statisticians and epidemiologists to plan analyses of specific hypotheses relating to genetic, biochemical and lifestyle data that should lead to methodological and applied publications.

The post-holder will have: a post graduate qualification in statistics or related area or equivalent experience; a sound understanding of statistical concepts, ideally in relation to chronic disease epidemiology, and strong quantitative skills, including experience of using relevant statistical software (Stata, R). Experience of analysing longitudinal data is essential, while familiarity with the principal methods of addressing missing data is desirable. The post-holder should also be able to work independently, accurately judge priorities, and have excellent organizational, communication and presentation skills.

This position can be filled by an appropriate candidate at Research Assistant or Research Associate level, depending on relevant qualifications and experience and is available from January 2016. Appointment at Research Associate is dependent on having a PhD (or equivalent experience), including those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD. Where a PhD has yet to be awarded appointment will initially be made at research assistant and amended to research associate when the PhD is awarded.

The post holder will work under the direction of Dr Angela Wood and Prof Simon Thompson.

The funding for this post is available until 31st December 2018
