This full-timeacademic post is based in sigma, CoventryUniversity’s central team that provides mathematics and statistics support tostudents from all faculties as well as to staff and postgraduates engaged inresearch. The person appointed would join the two statisticians currently in sigma, who spend part of their time asstatistics lecturers in the School of Computing, Electronics and Mathematics inthe Faculty of Engineering, Environment and Computing. In addition to the mainrole providing statistics support on a 1:1 or small group basis, the appointeewould also be expected to contribute to the teaching of statistics in theFaculty and to collaborate on applied research.

 
The Mathematics Support Centre (MSC) and theStatistics Advisory Service (SAS) are sigma’smost important responsibilities. The Support Centre,strategically situated in the University Library, is typically open 40 hours aweek and deals with over 10,000 student visits a year.  The Statistics Service, which is led byProfessor Tim Sparks, has four main strings to its teaching bow: (1) regulartime-slots in the MSC when students can drop in without an appointment forstatistics advice; (2) hour-long appointments for either undergraduate andpostgraduate students working on projects and theses or university staffundertaking research; (3) statistics workshops on wide-ranging topics from SPSStraining to multiple regression for staff as well as students; (4) occasionaltraining on topics such as numerical reasoning and the use of Excel.


 
Inaddition to front-line teaching, which is mainly one-to-one, sigma staff also

·        provide online support and training 

·        offer consultancy for University research bids andprojects;

·        create teaching and learning resources

·        promote their services across campus through personalcontact and interest groups 

·        contribute to the national network for mathematics andstatistics support (also called sigma).


 
We intend toappoint a qualified statistician with a PhD and background, knowledge andinterests covering a broad range of subjects. A specialism complementing thoseof the current staff would be welcomed, for example, but not exclusively, in theareas of Finance, Business or Social Sciences. Familiarity with statisticssoftware is required (CoventryUniversity uses SPSS, Minitab and R and some other packages less frequently). Above all, applicants should have agenuine vocation for helping others to learn, an ability to communicate well acrossa wide range of degree levels and student abilities, and a willingness to gothe extra mile.
