Hi Marta,

Yes, we accept data from non-UK researchers.  Also, our self-archiving system ReShare, is open to researchers, even if they have not been funded by ESRC.

We have done a bit of work on data appraisal.  The link below is for an event we run (with ICPSR) and guidance on our website.

Here is the UKDA guidance on data appraisal.

I certainly appreciate the burdens on smaller repositories of handling personal and sensitive data.  We feel it too, and it is one of the main reasons we focus on research data management and planning—working with researchers to anticipate any challenges to sharing as they design their research projects, and not after the fact. Planning is not a panacea, but it helps.

Best,

Libby

Hi Libby,

Thank you very much for the reference. Laurence Horton took part in our discussion about sharing personal/sensitive data and contributed valuable points about services offered by UKDA (which are really impressive indeed).

I understand that researchers can submit their data to UKDA and if after the appraisal (https://www.ukdataservice.ac.uk/media/455175/cd234-collections-appraisal.pdf), the UKDA wishes to accept the data, the three options for data access will be considered. However, I also understand that in some instances the UKDA might not want to accept the data and advise the researcher to use alternative repositories (for example, institutional repositories).

Of curiosity, do you possibly know if UKDA would consider accepting data from non-UK researchers?

Our conference discussion focused on how smaller repositories/data services (for example, institutional repositories) address problems around sharing of personal/sensitive data. Do they accept them at all? What are the practical workflows for sharing these types of data? (bearing in mind the amount of resources available to institutional repositories).

Best wishes,

Marta

Hi Marta,

It is great to see interest in personal and sensitive data.  I am not sure which data curators you were referring to in your blog, but UKDA makes potentially disclosive data available through its Secure Access systems for controlled data.

https://www.ukdataservice.ac.uk/get-data/data-access-policy/controlled-data

There is also extensive info about how to collect personal and sensitive data for potential sharing here:

Best,

Libby

Subject: Blog post on sharing personal/sensitive data

Dear All,

(apologies for cross-posting)

Fiona Nielsen from Repositive and I just published a blog post from the Birds of a Feather discussion about sharing personal/sensitive data that took place at IDCC 16 in Amsterdam last week:

https://unlockingresearch.blog.lib.cam.ac.uk/?p=551

As a result of this discussion (more questions than answers and really good questions!) we are now planning to submit a session proposal to SciDataCon 2016 on sharing personal/sensitive data. If you would like to propose a practice paper for the session, please fill in the google form here:

(more details about the proposal and its scope in the blog post)

Best wishes,

Marta
