I always try to advise students against online plagiarism checking… at best they’re getting false assurance that their work is “plagiarism free” because the databases of such services are inevitably impoverished when compared to something like Turnitin. Not to mention that there’s essentially no risk of accidental plagiarism if a student isn’t using questionable practises (copying and pasting then editing etc) in the first place.

I’ve just had a long and entertaining web chat with “Oleg” from UnPlag.com. From what he says, this site basically seems to be a fancy way of googling your essays and checking for matches. It wouldn’t detect matches between the essays of different students for example. In a nutshell it wouldn’t assist cheating particularly, but it is exploitative to the extent that they’re charging for nothing of any real value.
