There are two items that I wanted to bring to the attention of the list. We have previously had discussions about predatory online journals and open access to journal papers.

The first link relates to an amusing prank

http://www.sciencealert.com/journal-accepts-paper-titled-get-me-off-your-f-cking-mailing-list?utm_source=Article&utm_medium=Website&utm_campaign=InArticleReadMore <http://www.sciencealert.com/journal-accepts-paper-titled-get-me-off-your-f-cking-mailing-list?utm_source=Article&utm_medium=Website&utm_campaign=InArticleReadMore>

that highlights some of the worst excesses of predatory publishing. With the growth in online journals, a common question in PhD student communities is around which journals I should publish in, and how can I tell a predatory journal from a serious one? Of course Beall’s list helps

https://scholarlyoa.com/2015/01/02/bealls-list-of-predatory-publishers-2015/ <https://scholarlyoa.com/2015/01/02/bealls-list-of-predatory-publishers-2015/>

but there are wider issues of students being adequately integrated with the community of scholars and therefore gaining good advice. There are similar issues with conferences.

The second link is about a brave stand against paywall publishing.

Traditionalists may be disturbed by this, revolutionaries will undoubtedly cheer. It is however a complex issue that requires further debate and perhaps a new business model not yet invented. http://sci-hub.io is an amazing site. Incidentally if you want to undertake a search-string inquiry rather than DOI or other direct techniques, the Google Chrome plug-in is excellent.

I am indebted to Paul Barrett over on IDANET for bringing sci-hub.io to my attention.

Enjoy!

David
