2 Doctoral students in Design Type of employment: Fixed-term employment, 2020-08-31 Extent: 100 % Location: School of Design and Crafts, Gothenburg First day of employment: 2016-09-01 Reference number: UR 2016/191 The ambition of HDK, Academy of Design and Crafts, is to be one of the most attractive and exciting art universities in Europe. Here, we do research and education in design, crafts and arts education. The Department is engaged in big and small societal issues, and contributes to a sustainable society and a better future. HDK is announcing two doctoral student positions in third-cycle education (doctoral level) in the subject of design. The common starting point is the holistic approach to design activity and artistic competence which is independent of the design direction and design areas, but with a clear societal orientation and humanistic profile where responsibility and ethical considerations, in terms of global, intersectional and sustainability perspectives, play a major role. The subject of design at HDK is thus intended to establish a dialogue between practice-based, theoretical and societal questions pertaining to design and design practice. The subject focuses on design as practice through expression and form with the help of relevant methods and theories. Design competency is characterised by the ability to fuse, in a meaningful expression and form, a diversity of knowledge perspectives. The subject design is something that develops in the dialogue between education, research and the society at large. The aim of doctoral (third-cycle) education in design is to educate with the help of methods relevant to the subject field both in practice and in theory, with a focus on developing the ability to autonomously and critically expand the base of knowledge with regard to breadth as well as depth. The aim of the programme is to develop the knowledge and skills required to independently and autonomously be able to pursue artistic research, as well as to contribute to the formation of knowledge within the subject. This includes the ability to identify, formulate and examine artistic and/or scientific problems and issues within the design field. Doctoral (third-cycle) education in design shall develop the ability of doctoral students to form, explore, analyse and discuss design in social and cultural contexts, as well as to demonstrate critical and reflective capacity in relation to the research field. Job assignments The doctoral position entails third-cycle (doctoral) studies that comprise 240 higher education credits, corresponding to four years of full-time study. The programme consists of a course component of 60-90 higher education credits and a dissertation component of 150-180 higher education credits. The main objective of the course component is to introduce and develop the research practice of the artistic field. The course component aims to provide the student deeper and broader theoretical knowledge and methodological schooling. The dissertation component includes own research and design work as well as the completion of a doctoral thesis. The programme leads to a Doctor of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy in Fine Arts. The third-cycle programme at HDK is partially organised in joint courses and activities in a research school where theoretical and methodical issues with a special focus on artistic research are addressed. The research school is run by the three Departments at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts within the doctoral education. The doctoral student, who has temporary employment, will be a member of the department of Design and is expected to actively participate in and collaborate with the education in the first and second cycles. HDK would like the doctoral education within the scope of the doctoral student position to be combined with teaching corresponding to 20% of full-time. This entails a rate of study of 80% and a total period of education of five years. If such a solution is not possible, the education will be conducted at full time (100% rate of study), unless special reason exists for a lower rate of study, although not lower than 50%. A person meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she: has been awarded a master’s (second-cycle) qualification, or has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits were awarded at master’s (second-cycle) level, or has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad. Specific entry requirements in the subject of design entail: - At least 120 higher education credits (or the equivalent) in the subject, or, alternatively, in another subject/other subjects that is/are considered to have relevance to doctoral (third-cycle) studies in the subject, or equivalent knowledge. - A documented specialisation of study including subjects oriented towards relevant issues in the subject. - An independent project comprising at least 30 higher education credits (thesis or, alternatively, several projects, which, together, are considered to be the equivalent of 30 higher education credits) in the subject, or, alternatively, in another subject/other subjects that is/are considered as having relevance to the doctoral studies in the subject. - Documented ability to work with expression and form and critically reflective issues and processes at an advanced level. An applicant also meets the specific requirements if he or she has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad. Assessment Selection among applicants that fulfil the criteria for the entry requirements will be based on the application documents received and on interviews with the applicants who, in the first place, are considered to be possible candidates for admission. The following assessment criteria are applied to test this ability: the feasibility of the research project described in the application, as well as its relevance and degree of impact and significance in relation to the subject description for design, autonomous ability and the ability to think critically in the subject field and artistic quality and autonomy, including experiences on a professional level in the subject. Additional information The application must include: - Copies of certified degree certificate/certificates of enrolment and any other certificates that may be of interest for the application. - A CV/compilation of qualifications including professional experience and a list of publications shall be appended, as well as degree projects, documentation work/exhibitions, C/D essays, books, articles, etc. for assessment. - A project description of 5–10 pages shall be appended, including illustrations, photos etc, which describes the research project that the applicant wants to conduct as a dissertation project in the programme. This shall include a description of the project's purpose, aims, content and methods as well as a timetable.
