Professor in Design Type of employment: Fixed-term employment, 5 years Extent: 100 % Location: School of Design and Crafts, Gothenburg First day of employment: According to the agreement Reference number: PER 2016/20 The ambition of HDK – Academy of Design and Crafts, is to be one of Europe’s most attractive and exciting fine arts academies. The Academy pursues research and education in the fields of design, crafts, and educational sciences and involves itself in social issues contributing to a sustainable society and a brighter future. HDK’s academic programmes, master’s programmes and research activities in the field of design are based on a holistic view of the discipline and focus particularly on the shared creative expertise that lies at the heart of all design work. Our activities are based on a fine arts foundation. Our students take an interdisciplinary and critical approach to artefacts and services in an expanded and overlapping design discipline, including environments, processes, structures and systems in a post-disciplinary spirit that heavily emphasizes the social and societal aspects of design. HDK currently offers four design programmes. One programme, Design, is offered at the first-cycle level. The Academy also offers the second-cycle programmes Design, Child Culture Design (CCD) and a programme taught in collaboration with the university’s School of Business, Economics and Law, called Business & Design. HDK runs a graduate programme in design with positions for around ten doctoral students. It also offers stand-alone courses in the field. Subject area Design Specific subject description Design as taught at the Academy of Design and Crafts involves a dialogue between practice-based, theoretical and social issues related to design and design practice. The Academy focuses on design as a creative artistic practice, from the reflecting practitioner’s knowledge about the act of designing with an insider’s perspective to the debate and theory concerning design on-going in various social, cultural, financial and technological contexts, both in the contemporary times and historically. It bases its work on the holistic view of design as a critical and artistic competence, and this characterizes the academic programmes and research conducted within the field of design at the Academy. This view is independent of the design specialization and interpretive fields, while having a clear social and humanistic profile in which responsibility, ethical considerations and global and intersectional perspectives play important roles. In today’s increasingly pluralistic and multicultural society, strict demands are imposed on design and design processes and their purposes, how they are executed, for whom they are intended and, above all, what impact they leave. Consequently, questions arise concerning participation, co-creation and transdisciplinarity that challenge design and its methods, processes, roles and tools as an ethical/aesthetic practice. Design education is developed in a dialogue held among educators, researchers and the broader community. Job assignments The appointed professor in design will work to strengthen the Academy’s research and education work. She or he will be a member of the department in charge of overseeing the design programmes at the first-, second-, and third-cycle levels, which also conducts research. The professor will play an important role in developing the design subject, including first-, second- and third-cycle programmes and research. She or he will also work to promote development towards complete academic environmentscharacterized by a continuous exchange and interchange among educational and research institutions and the broader community. This task involves spearheading the critical debate on design within the Design Programme as well as participating in the public debate. The position also involves working to promote the international visibility of the field of Child Culture Design (CCD) in both research and education contexts in cooperation with others. Play, co-design and children’s rights are key concepts in the work being done to develop the CCD environment. In addition, the professor will work to develop networks, collaborations and research projects both within and outside the academic sphere, nationally and globally. In addition to providing instruction and student supervision within the programme, the position also includes conducting personal research in the field as well as managing administrative duties and various forms of development work in close cooperation with other staff members. The position also involves working together with colleagues to develop both the field of design studies and the editorial work done within the design programmes and within the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts’ PARSE publication platform. Eligibility The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance. A person who has demonstrated both artistic and teaching expertise shall be qualified for employment as a professor in disciplines in the fine, applied or performing arts. This position also requires a doctoral degree in the fine arts or equivalent in design or a design-related subject. Assessment Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Assessment of artistic expertise - documented artistic expertise at the international level -well documented practice and research relevant to the discipline and recognized at the international level - documented experience of children’s culture and youth culture projects - documented experience of successfully developing and implementing artistic projects - visibility and professional regard in the art world and professional contexts. Assessment of educational expertise - documented experience and ability related to teaching and supervising doctoral students - significant skills and experience in developing courses and educational activities - proven familiarity with theory and topical debates related to the design discipline and how these are incorporated in teaching. Assessment of research expertise -documented experience of building and working with strategic partnerships related to research and education - documented success of receiving research funding - documented experience of project work or research within areas relevant to the position - documented experience of successfully developing and implementing research projects. Assessment of cooperative ability -proven ability to build environments and networks and to work collaboratively and in a multi- and transdisciplinary manner - international networks within the discipline and related disciplines. Miscellaneous -proven ability to develop and maintain good working conditions in various professional contexts and workplace cultures - highly developed cooperation skills - highly developed organizational skills - highly developed administrative skills - proficiency in both spoken and written English. We will also make an overall assessment and the applicant considered to be best qualified to carry out and develop the duties described above will be appointed to the position. The applicant’s approach to design and the design profession and how it relates to the Academy’s profile are also important considerations.
