New Open Educational Resources (OER) Policies & Related Developments
Fiji approved a National Policy on Open Educational Resources. The purpose of the policy is “to provide direction in the use of open educational resources to increase access to and support quality learning and teaching in Fiji’s education and training system. In doing so, the policy seeks to strengthen commitment to OER by all concerned including the Government”.
The University of Edinburgh, Scotland, approved a new Open Educational Resources Policy. The Policy “encourages staff and students to use, create, and publish OERs to enhance the quality of the student experience, enhance the provision of learning opportunities for all, and improve teaching practices”. Institute for Open Leadership #2. Creative Commons hosted the second Institute for Open Leadership (IOL#2). The Institute is a training and peer-to-peer learning opportunity that brings together up-and-coming leaders to develop and implement an open licensing policy in their institution, province or nation. A diverse group of fellows from 14 countries participated in IOL#2, March 14-18, 2016 in Cape Town, South Africa. Read more about IOL#2 here.
Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) released OER policy resources. Learn about OER policies through a series of multimedia presentations on Open Education policy strategy, implementation and vision.
Launch of New Initiatives
OER Degree Initiative announced. The Open Educational Resources (OER) Degree Initiative is an opportunity for public two-year colleges in the U.S. and Canada to apply for funding to develop OER-based degrees, aiming to increase completion rates and access by involving faculty in redesigning courses and degree programs using open educational resources. This initiative includes support by Achieving the Dream, Lumen Learning, SRI International and the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources. To find out more click here. OEWeb, University of California Irvine’s open-source platform for hosting OER on the Web, is now available on GitHub. The platform ties together a set of easy-to-populate forms with a graphical, drag-and-drop backend. Click here for more information and click here to download the files.
Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), Spain: RUSC. Universities and Knowledge Society Journal has become the International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education (ETHE). The journal focuses on the use and impact of information technology in higher education, including OER and MOOCs. It will continue to be open access and will be published only in digital format. Articles are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. To learn more and access the journal click here.
Latest Activities in OER Research
Update on OER impact and adoption in the Global South. The Research on Open Educational Resources for Development (ROER4D) has recently released a newsletter with updates on their research activities related to OER impact and adoption in the Global South. The newsletter is available here. Don’t miss the thoughtful and provocative contribution by Matthew Smith, IDRC Program Manager, entitled “Open is as Open Does”.
Do you have pressing OER research questions that need to be answered? The Open Education Research Hub is collecting information about research priorities in open education. Fill out a short survey here and let them know about important areas for open education research. Results will be discussed during the Open Education Global 2016 and OER16 conferences.
The Global OER Graduate Network (GO-GN) announced the 'First Wednesday of the Month' Webinar Series. Everyone is invited to join Martin Weller on April 6th at 16.00 GMT / 11.00 EST / 08.00 PST to discuss ‘Identifying categories of OER users’. Open Education Global Conference 2016 will take place in Kraków, Poland from 12-14 April 2016. With less than two weeks to go to Open Education Global Conference 2016 there is still time to register.
On the conference website, you will be able to find out about the Keynote Speakers and the conference program. The 2016 Conference will feature more than 80 presentations and action labs. During the conference, the Open Education Awards for Excellence will be presented. Selected conference papers will be published in the April issue of the OpenPraxis journal.
