medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Good local oolitic limestone I suspect.  No need to get fancy stuff from miles away when there’s plenty on your doorstep, even if you are the local  millionaire

Jerome Bertram does suggest that it may occasionally have happened.

Anne, do you know what the stone is?

I have often wondered whether the 1540’s Horton Brass at Holy Trinity, Bradford on Avon, is a re-used altar slab. There are/were several brasses on the slab carefully placed where crosses might have been. [Sorry, I do not have a photo of the whole thing]

It's unlikely. Brasses were usually set into the slab at the marblers' workshop and the whole thing shipped to the church. The slab would usually be Purbeck marble, which is probably unusual for an altar stone.
