Dear all,

The Library & Information History Group are pleased to announce that we are now taking bookings for our annual conference, on the theme of ‘Information History: Perspectives & Prospects.’ The conference will be held on Friday 6 May 2016 at the HQ of CILIP, 7 Ridgmount St, London, WC1E 7AE.

The informatisation of our culture has prompted a lively discussion across a range of academic disciplines on topics that can justifiably be marshalled under the term ‘information history’. While accepting that different cultures and periods of history have understood information in different ways, this conference takes its cue from modern connotations attached to the word. Such connotations revolve around the nature of information as, firstly, something of immediate functional utility and value, and secondly, as discrete units of communicated knowledge, what Nunberg referred to as the ‘corpuscular’ or ‘morselised’ nature of information.

The keynote speaker will be Martin Campbell-Kelly, Emeritus Professor of Computing, Warwick University. Professor Campbell-Kelly has undertaken pioneering studies on data processing in the nineteenth-century railway and insurance industries and is co-author of Computer: A History of the Information Machine (2014, 3rd edn.) and From Mainframes to Smartphones: A History of the International Computer Industry (2015). An additional invited speaker is Dr Toni Weller, Visiting Research Fellow in History, De Montfort University, Leicester. Dr Weller is author of Information History – an Introduction (2008) and editor of Information History in the Modern World (2011).
