I already have about 200 but if we decide to buy we will need another 450 of calcs and maths sets.  The other thing to consider is how to label them so we get them back…you will always have someone who has to use their ‘lucky’ calc…

Another job!

Unfortunately even though the Maths department tell them to buy a calculator for the course lots of them try and get by using their mobile phones in class.  Think we will be buying at least a hundred in case

Hi

We are having a big discussion here what to do about equipment.  Maths are trying hard to get learners to buy a calc/maths set..really cheap from us, but they aren’t…..

I have asked for a decision from up above because on the day I don’t want my staff/invigilators to be the ones who decide who gets the spares and who doesn’t?  At the end of the day if the kids don’t have the equipment then it will harm success….

Let you know… just another day in the life of exams!

We supply them, but ask that teachers hammer home to students the need bring their own equipment before the exams.

We’ve just bought a nice box of 30 calculators in a colour that few students have, engraved and labelled so we don’t lose them!  We will also supply the other equipment, at the insistence of the maths department (it took them 5 years to wear me down though!).  However, I insist that we never supply a black pen if they don’t bring one – if a student can’t remember to bring one of these (after nearly a year here) then they really aren’t trying hard enough….

Ok, would like to do quick straw poll –

GCSE Maths exams…to supply or not supply calculator?

To help learners develop by teaching them a lesson, or not risk impact on college achievement…
