Shirley I would get clarification as to whether, to
your ALS, ‘separate’ means ‘individual’. Page 69 of the orange book and page 24 of the ICE book are the only place separate invigilation’ is made reference too, and an Exam Officer could reasonably interpret what is written as ‘separate from the main
exam venue’ rather than ‘separate and on their own’ – that is certainly how I interpret it and I would want some really strong evidence that couldn’t possibly be provided by assessment alone to prove ‘individual rooms’ were needed.
Also, the bottom line is, as Caroline Read of Communicate-Ed is always saying, centres can only provide according to their resources and there has to be a balance between need and resources at all times. Sounds
to me as if your ALS just spout the techy stuff to cover themselves but aren’t willing to engage in what could work for the individual given the resources available.
Let us know what happens!

Hi
Thanks everyone. My difficulty is that our ALS just keep saying the same thing….they have been assessed and entitled to a separate room… I have asked the question who is a ‘MUST’ be in a separate room and who
would be ok in one of our other smaller rooms…, but I ust keep getting the same rhetoric ….they have been assessed as needing a separate room……
Unless we build more rooms, they will have to share!
Thanks for the replies ….looks like I’m not the only one with this headache!

Hello Shirley,
We are in the same boat, and frequently put smaller groups of not quite so anxious students in a classroom of around 6-10 students.
Our Learning Support dept deal with around 800 student per year, and will “classify” them as “must be alone”/”can cope in smaller room” etc
We use this info when rooming them.

Karen

Subject: REQUESTS FOR SEPARATE ROOMS
Hi Everyone
Just a quick question.
How many separate rooms have you been asked for, for EAA in your GCSE’s? We have been asked for about 33 separate rooms for each of our GCSE English (1 exam) and our (Calc and Non Calc) maths (2 exams).
We have around 700 candidates and our biggest room seats 60 candidates, all the others will be in rooms of about 25 or less – so far around 70ish rooms will be needed…without the 33 separate ones! Getting desperate…we don’t have enough
rooms!
Does anyone put learners who have been assessed as being entitled to a sep room in a smaller room with others???
If you could let me know what you do at your centres it would be appreciated.
Thanks in anticipation
Shirley
