We follow this rule for any type of access to scripts. Consent must be given from all students who may request a photocopy or original. On receipt of original which are used for teaching purposes we also mark our their names on the script .

We initially request verbal consent which is followed up by written consent. If for whatever reason written consent is not gained we do not release the script and it is then destroyed. This does not happen very often the majority of written consents are received.

Thanks

Karen

Thanks Sarah. Yes, I always thought it referred to original scripts, but it doesn’t actually say that, so I thought it must refer to photo-copied ones as well.

Joyce, teachers would email their students to seek permission to use their original scripts for teaching & learning purposes. We only request the scripts when we have confirmation from the teachers that they have the required permissions.

I think the highlighted passage refers to original scripts not photocopied ones however I have just phoned JCQ for clarification – the lady who answered the phone is unable to tell me and has suggested I email Nick Lait – watch this space!

Subject: Access to scripts

Hi

I have been asked by senior management to ask those of you who do A Levels how you manage the rule below which is in the JCQ Post-Results Services booklet.

Page 14

A candidate has the right to instruct their centre not to request their script(s).

Prior written permission must therefore be obtained from any candidate where the centre intends to request his/her script(s).

This permission must be sought only after the candidates have received their results for the respective examination series. Candidates who grant their permission have the right to anonymity of their scripts before use.

A specimen form for centre staff when seeking a candidate’s written permission to request and use scripts is attached as Appendix B, page 18. Written consent from the candidate is also acceptable by e-mail.

Our subjects order hundreds of photo-copied scripts and have previously only obtained consent when they wish to use the scripts for teaching and learning. However they often order scripts to have a look at with a view to going for a remark and obviously there is only a small window in which to do this, so we haven’t previously asked their permission. However in this year’s booklet, it is highlighted in yellow.

How does everyone else manage this, do you follow the rules exactly or bend them slightly as we have been doing.

Regards
Joyce
