Call for Abstracts (Book chapter contribution)

Book Title: Reflections on Disability and Sustainable Development in Southern Africa

Editor: Tsitsi Chataika (PhD), University of Zimbabwe, Department of Educational Foundations

Publisher: Ashgate Publishing Limited, Surrey, United Kingdom

Rationale:

The purpose of this book is to document Southern African experiences on disability and sustainable development. The intention is to share best practices, challenges and lessons learnt within the region so that we  forge a way forward towards realising the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals and the tenets of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. I urge potential contributors, regardless of their fields of training, to articulate their ideas about disability and sustainable development from an activist, policy, practice and research dimension. Thus, disabled people are urged to contribute. There will also be a section where disabled people will be able to share their  stories in relation to attitudinal, environmental (physical and communication) and institutional (policy and practice) barriers they face. The book will cover, but not limited to the following areas:

  • Disability politics and activism
  • Disability Mainstreaming/Inclusive Development
  • Inclusive Education (from early childhood to higher education)
  • Policy issues disability rights
  • Deafness and Deaf Culture
  • Children and youth with disabilities
  • Community Based Rehabilitation
  • Accessibility/ Inclusive development/ Universal Design
  • Political participation and electoral process
  • Disability, gender and sexuality
  • Disability, culture, religion, ethics and human dignity
  • Employment, entrepreneurship and sustainable development
  • Postcolonialism
  • Engagement with global partners working on disability issues
  • Personal stories on attitudinal, environmental and institutional barriers faced by disabled people.

Interested contributors are invited to send, via email a 250-word abstract using Microsoft Word (.doc), Times New Roman, with font size 12 by latest 15 April 2016 to Tsitsi Chataika – [log in to unmask].  Those with selected abstracts will be notified by latest 30 April 2016. For those abstracts that are selected, a chapter contribution of  not more than 6,000 words (including references and endnotes) should be submitted by 26 August 2016 (footnotes should be avoided).  If you are able to meet this deadline, we urge you to consider sharing your Southern African experiences on disability to the rest of the world via this groundbreaking text.

*Please Note that an invitation to submit an article based on an abstract does not guarantee publication of your book chapter*
