Thanks Malcolm. It’s always worrying to hear a tool can cause performance issues. Coupled with the fact that a lot of the functionality isn’t reliable, we might well turn it off too!

Best wishes

Melaine,

I can concur with Richard’s findings. After an enormous database spike one day, we were told in a support call that the current retention centre code has a bug that could affect performance drastically in a worst case scenario. As such we were advised that it would be worth “considering” turning it off if this was a risk we were not prepared to take. Sadly as far as I know it has not yet been fixed. :-(

Malcolm.

Dear all

Thanks for the responses, very helpful.

Richard – did Blackboard acknowledge your problem/classify it as an issue?

Many thanks

Hi Melanie,

At DMU a recent review of our core learning systems reported:

This tool is currently disabled as Blackboard had serious performance issues when this was enabled in the last upgrade. The Retention Centre synchronises through all live courses this slows down Blackboard significantly due to the large amount of Blackboard shells on our current system.

In solidarity,

Richard.

Melanie

Our testing in the summer suggested that it was completely unreliable as a way of monitoring missed assignment deadlines.

Would list individual students multiple times, and (in certain circumstances at least) would list students who had submitted, rather than those who had not.

We’ve just moved to 2015 Q4 but I don’t think that issue has been addressed.

Dear all

I’d be interested in hearing about any experiences with Blackboard’s Retention Centre – positive or negative.

Here at Leeds we’ve never promoted it as it’s been consistently slow to load e.g. between 30 seconds/1 minute for a course with 54 users. The more users the slower the tool loads. Blackboard have looked at it in the past and we’ve just opened a call with them but I’d be interested to know if it’s just us that have this problem.

In addition to the slow loading problems there are lots of known issues listed on Behind Blackboard, many of which don’t seem to have a schedule for resolution. It would be good to know if anyone has found anything to be a particular issue at their University.

Many thanks
Melanie
