Dementia and Reminiscence
12th April 2016

Aim
The course aim is to give an introduction to reminiscence and provide participants with skills and knowledge that will enable them to run reminiscence groups, intergenerational projects and/or carry out one to one reminiscence sessions with their clients.


Participant Group
This course is designed for health and social care practitioners, museums and library staff, informal carers, volunteers and anyone else who works directly or indirectly with clients including those with dementia. These skills are immediately transferable for working in residential, nursing, domiciliary, day care and community settings.

Learning Objectives


  *   Define the term reminiscence
  *   Promote reminiscence: skills, knowledge and attitudes
  *   Listen effectively and respond appropriately to the wide range of emotions created during  reminiscence work
  *   Adopt a multi-sensory approach to reminiscence
  *   Understand and use themes and triggers
  *   Know how to conduct life story work using different formats
  *   Plan and run a reminiscence session (one to one or group activity)
  *   Provide reminiscence sessions for those with dementia
  *   Adapt reminiscence activities to meet client needs
  *   Source a wide range of resources
  *   Understand the past reality of a person with dementia
  *   Use validation and resolution techniques for those clients with dementia who are 'harder to reach'
  *   Follow the principles of good practice when running a reminiscence session
  *   Value the benefits of reminiscence
  *   Understand the therapeutic value of reminiscence
