Clare Wood
Southbank Centre Archivist

Job title: Archive Trainee
Department: Festivals and Participation
Salary: £19,552.00 pro rata
Contract term: Part-time, 24 hours per week. 18 months fixed-term.

Attracting over 25 million visits a year, Southbank Centre passionately believes the arts have the power to transform lives. Our vision is to be the world’s most inspiring centre for the arts by making music, visual arts, dance, performance and literature available to all and to create the world’s leading festival site offering millions of people the opportunity to enjoy, learn and take part.

Today our artistic policy is designed around a year-round cycle of festivals based on a range of themes and subjects which span all art forms. Our employees are at the centre of delivering our mission, which is ‘to draw everyone possible to this loved site and captivate them through our unique arts programme and warmth of our welcome’.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to experience collections and archive in the context of a learning and participation team within a major arts centre, working on the delivery of a Heritage Lottery Funded Project. We are looking for an Archive Trainee to join our Archivist and Project Archivist as we work towards organising our amazing archive collections and making them accessible to the public for the first time.

Between 2015 and 2017 the Saving Southbank Centre’s 60s Buildings Project will restore the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Hayward Gallery for another generation. Alongside the capital work of restoring the beloved buildings, Southbank Centre is delivering an ambitious two-year programme of heritage education, co-curation and participation activities. At the heart of the project activity is the Archive Studio, prominently located in the Royal Festival Hall foyer; the engine for making Southbank Centre’s heritage and collections accessible and the focal point for archive organisation and collaborative projects.

With strong written and verbal communication skills, and excellent attention to detail; the ideal candidate will be passionate about archives, heritage and the arts and have a strong interest in building a career in the collections management sector. A strong team player with the ability to solve problems and work on your own initiative, you will be organised, good at multitasking and confident in your ability to prioritise your own workload. Some experience of working with or using archives, or collections and computerised collections management systems is desirable, but not essential.

You will develop expertise and skills related to working with archives within an arts organisation championing a participatory methodology to collections management and take an active role within the delivery of archive related activity. A positive attitude towards learning new skills and concepts is essential for this role.

We celebrate diversity in our programming, our audiences and our team. By attracting people to work for us from a broad range of backgrounds with diverse attitudes, opinions and beliefs we can continue to deliver the kind of exciting events and activities you would expect from the Southbank Centre.

Finally, the pace and scale at Southbank Centre can be breathtaking. In addition to our millions of visitors, we work with hundreds of schools and are home to four resident orchestras. We put on over 2500 new artistic productions, installations and performances a year. This is a remarkable place to work and our people require the ability to think, act and learn with speed and agility.
