PhD STUDENTSHIP

Research Institute for Primary Care & Health Sciences
Research Institute for Science and Technology in Medicine
Keele University

RPCH2016/01– Outcomes following acute myocardial infarction (AMI): an electronic health record database study.

We are looking to recruit a PhD student for a study set within the fields of cardiovascular medicine and primary care. The aim of this North Staffordshire Medical Institute funded study is to use high quality routinely recorded health care data to study complications in primary care patients who have sustained an AMI, and to model their relationship with long-term outcomes. The specific objectives are to determine the incidence of major bleeding and other complications occurring post discharge into the primary care setting following AMI, the characteristics of patients with such complications, and model the prognostic impact of complications on re-infarction and change in pharmacotherapy.

The PhD student will benefit from expertise within two research institutes at Keele University. The Institute for Primary Care and Health Sciences (iPCHS) is the largest and most successful Research Institute at Keele. 91% of Keele’s research in Primary Care has been judged world leading or internationally excellent by the Public Health, Health Services Research, and Primary Care assessment panel of the 2014 Universities UK’s Research Excellence Framework (REF).

The Keele Cardiovascular Research group is based in the Institute for Science and Technology in Medicine (iSTM) and has developed close links with iPCHS. The multidisciplinary team has an established track record of original research using general practice databases and national cardiovascular data to study optimal treatment strategies, risk stratification and outcomes in patients with cardiovascular diseases.
