We are looking for experienced, enthusiastic and motivated applicants for this permanent post at the William Harvey Hospital, Ashford. You should possess an MSc and/or PhD in Clinical Biochemistry and have completed, or be very near to completion of, STP training. Ideally you will have registration as a clinical scientist with the HCPC. We are particularly interested in individuals with experience of clinical applications of mass spectrometry.

Although this post is based at William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, the Trust has three acute hospital sites (William Harvey Hospital at Ashford, Kent and Canterbury Hospital at Canterbury and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital at Margate). All sites have laboratories and the post holder may be required to work on the other sites, in particular at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital.

Our laboratories provide a wide range of diagnostic tests with some specialised services provided on one or more of our sites. The laboratories at the William Harvey Hospital have been extensively refurbished. The Trust serves a population of approximately 700,000, making it one of the largest trusts in the UK and the laboratory processes approximately 9 million biochemistry and immunology tests annually. The Department of Laboratory Medicine employs 320 staff and has an annual budget of £18 million. All primary care work from East Kent is processed at the Ashford laboratory. The laboratory has CPA accreditation and is recognised for training purposes. The clinical scientist team consists of two consultants, two principal grade, two senior grade and up to three trainee clinical biochemists.

Our laboratories provide a wide range of diagnostic tests with some specialised services provided. The post-holder will be expected to undertake method development, quality management, clinical liaison and protocol development. They will contribute to medical teaching and the training of both trainee clinical scientists and biomedical scientists. There is an active clinical research programme and the post-holder will be expected to participate in research activity. There are regular journal club, clinical conference calls and clinical meetings which all clinical scientists attend.

The hospitals are situated within easy reach of London and Europe by both road and rail (e.g. 35 minutes from Ashford to London St Pancras). East Kent is a delightful place to live with a fantastic coastline, beautiful countryside and villages, outstanding schools and the cathedral city of Canterbury.
