Hospitality and Tourism Management Postgraduate Research Studentships for PhD study
The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at the University of Surrey is offering full-time doctoral (postgraduate research) studentships starting in October 2016. The studentships
will cover tuition fees, and provide maintenance for a total of up to £14,057 pa*.
We are looking to recruit exceptional PhD students whose research interests complement our areas of research strengths to join our PhD programme (3 year studentship).
It is expected that the research project will enable successful applicants to develop new theoretical/empirical understanding in relation to one of the three school themes:

Competitiveness in the Visitor Economy
- Innovation, productivity, competitiveness, and labour market changes
- Quality and diversity in employment, whether that be gender, youth or basic fairness of employment practices
- Demand forecasting, destination branding, technological developments and new methods of revenue management

Sustainability and Well-being in the Visitor Economy
- Environmental, socio-cultural and ethical implications of tourism, hospitality and events
- Pro-environmental behaviour change, transitions to sustainable transport, best practice and the creation of indicators of sustainability
- Impacts for health and well-being

The Digital Visitor Economy
- The broad economic, social, and organisational changes that both facilitate and result from new digital technologies
- The role of digital technologies in enhancing the guest experience; including augmented reality, smart phones, social media and conventional media such as films
- The social and managerial changes that drive innovations in the digital visitor economy
Although we strongly encourage applicants focusing on the three key themes, we also welcome applications in other areas that match our research interests.
Our PhD programme comprises approximately three years of full time study during which you will undertake a structured, supervised programme of scholarly research leading to a thesis that makes
an original contribution to knowledge and is of a standard appropriate for publication in high-quality refereed journals. As a member of the ESRC funded South East Doctoral Training Centre we offer excellent research training and the opportunity to be part
of a vibrant research community that shapes agendas of scholarship and practice.
Successful candidates will normally have or expect to be awarded a first class (1st) Bachelors degree or have or expect to be awarded a minimum of distinction on their Masters degree in Hospitality/Tourism
Management, or Social Sciences/related discipline (Human Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, International Development, Politics, Psychology, Economics). They will have outstanding research potential and enthusiasm to pursue research in an area consistent
with our research expertise. Non-native speakers of English will normally require IELTS 7.0 or above with a minimum of 6.5 in each component (or equivalent).

*Maintenance comprises a stipend of £14,057 pa, which includes a contribution of 160 hours pa to the School’s teaching and research activities, plus a £750 pa research training support grant.
