Dear SEDA and EDC
Many thanks for your response to me
question about suitable courses for Heads of ADUS - or those aspiring to
such a role.
Most of the responses came directly
to me - I have combined those from the EDC (Educational Developers' Caucus
in Canada) and SEDA (Staff and Educational Development Association
mainly in the UK) and I have also included most of those that were made
direct to a list so that members of the other list may see them as well.
There seems to be quite a bit of interest
in this topic with a range of suggestions. I have grouped the responses
around the courses that were mentioned and where appropriate provided anonymized
comments. Some people were happy to be quoted, but I've tried to be consistent.
Please note all comments are people's personal views and I am neither endorsing
nor implicitly agreeing with them.
UK Based:
Leadership Foundation for HE
Offer a number of courses aimed at developing
various aspects of leadership and management, including a new one on Building
Financial and Legal Capabilities. See http://www.lfhe.ac.uk/en/programmes-events/programmes/index.cfm
The Finance course is £1,750 for staff from member organisations.
Comments: I can't speak for this course,
but I've been on a couple of others, and found them very good.
There is also a new LFHE one specifically for Senior women leaders that
is just being piloted that includes finance and budgets. Its running in
London in the spring, Bristol June /july
http://www.lfhe.ac.uk/en/programmes-events/index.cfm/leadership-matters
The Aurora programme:
http://www.lfhe.ac.uk/en/programmes-events/programmes/women-only/aurora/index.cfm
This is specifically for women in Higher
Education. I have only attended one session, but it has been very motivating
so far, with plenty of on line support. There are ‘spin off’ courses
for delegates around Finance, which as Sally mentioned is so crucial. A
core module is also ‘Power and Politics’ which I’m sure will be very
interesting….!
Another aspect is the involvement of
‘Aurora Champions’ who act as contacts between institutions and
help identify role models within the sector, many at VC level.

Canada Based
CHERD -Centre for Higher Education Research
and Development, University of Manitoba
Offer several courses and certificates
http://umanitoba.ca/centres/cherd/programs/annual/suac.html
I took the course for senior leaders
- deans, VPs , presidents that requires nomination from your president's
office. It was interesting, worth it for the credibility I got from knowing
these folks at other institutions. If I had been able to go early
in my career the content would have been even better . Certificate on my
wall is good too
Everyone I know who has taken a course
such as the one you describe always mentions the CHERD course that you’ve
already found as being the gold standard.
I have taken a CHERD course
on managing university budgets and found it very, very helpful! It was
also really great to see how other institutions were set up; the group
work in the online course was one of the best parts. I think they have
a handful of courses relevant to the director level.
I hear their University
Management Course is outstanding, but I don’t know that from personal
experience.
With respect to the offerings
through CHERD, I took one of the courses of CUCA I to see if it was worthwhile
about a year ago. It was 3 weeks with a deliverable every week, plus discussion
posts throughout. It was intensive, but quick. I thought it was good, but
due to the structure of the course, it was hard to get depth of understanding.
Perhaps doing all of the required courses would give that depth overall,
but individually just completing the one course, I didn’t get that.
Finally, if cost is at
all a consideration, I have seen the CHERD courses offered at a discount,
and overall is less expensive than going to Harvard.
I've been interested in the same thing
and found the CHERD certificate as well. I just took my first course, which
was on Mission, Culture and Governance. It was pretty good - not the most
interactive course I've been in, but it got me reading some material I
hadn't tackled before and thinking about different questions. One of my
goals with the certificate is to better understand how universities work,
and if the first course is any indication this certificate should help
with that. There are quite a few administrators at [X university] in senior
positions that have taken this certificate. Most seemed happy with it,
but one piece of feedback I got was that attending the University Mangement
Course<http://umanitoba.ca/centres/cherd/programs/annual/umc.html>
was way better than the online courses. I would love to do it, but will
have to see as it is a week-long intensive in Banff.
Colleges and Institutes
Canada runs a number of programs focused on leadership and management,

about the offerings through Queen's Smith School of Business and Industrial

Comment - Senior leadership has taken
initiative to develop some of the newer managers as a cohort, and I've
had the chance to connect with others in the organization who are at similar
stages in their career. The MDC courses are open to anyone and if any of
these strike your fancy we would love to have you visit Oshawa!

Dear colleagues
I'm researching the availability of courses for managers/ administrators
in HE - in particular as they may be relevant for someone in my position...
or someone who would like to become a Director/head of an eductaional
development centre.
I have found this one at the University of Manitoba - http://umanitoba.ca/centres/cherd/programs/web-based/cuca1.html
and wondered if anyone on the list has experience of the course and if
so if they would recommend it.
I'm also interested in hearing about any other courses that might be out
there that folk would recommend.
I'm talking about leadership and management, not educational development
per se.
If so please reply direct to me - [log in to unmask], and I shall compile
a list to share with the list. I've posted a similar request on the SEDA
list, so will be interesting to see if there is a difference in response
between the two communities!
Many thanks
