Dear All,

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who took the time to reply to my
query last week about information audits. There were a number of responses
and a great deal of useful advice given, so thank you very much indeed for
sharing your knowledge so generously – it is very much appreciated!

If it’s of interest to the list, I’ve summarised the key points that came
out from the responses I received:

   1. Have a clear purpose for your audit. This message came through in
almost all the responses received, as being imperative for a successful
   audit.
   2. Wherever possible, have face-to-face meetings with staff, and use
   questionnaires/remote audits as a backup/follow up approach.
   3. Senior management buy-in is also key – this enforces the audit with
staff who are less inclined to participate, and raises the profile of the
   exercise.
   4. The focus of the audit should be on functions rather than specific
departments/teams, etc. This helps with later activities such as retention
and architecture in a SharePoint context.
   5. The Records Management Society have a very useful guidance document
on conducting an information audit, available here:
   *http://www.irms.org.uk <http://www.irms.org.uk/>**/*
   *resources/information-guides**/**195-information-audit**-**guideline**s*

Thank you again for the advice offered, and best wishes,

Mandy
