Are you a budding broadcaster doing a physical sciences PhD and with a desire to communicate more powerfully?
Supported by the STFC, the Naked Scientists have a programme that offers candidates a unique training experience in science radio journalism.
Over an 8 week period, successful applicants will develop skills in researching and compiling science news coverage, online publishing and podcasting as well as live and pre-recorded radio broadcasting. We are looking for talented and motivated individuals who are serious about using science communication in their future careers.
Based at Cambridge University, The Naked Scientists are an award-winning production venture that works with broadcasters and publishers internationally, including the BBC, to produce high quality, professional science output that reaches audiences in the millions.

Who can apply?
Applicants should be currently undertaking their PhD in a field within the remit of the STFC or an STFC facility. These include: particle physics, nuclear physics, astronomy (including space science), technology, energy, computational science and the many other cross disciplinary areas in which the STFC works.
How is the placement funded?
The Naked Scientists training programme is supported by the STFC. Successful awardees will receive the equivalent of two months of their PhD stipend or equivalent at UK research council rate; accordingly, applicants should plan to defer submission of their PhD thesis by the same duration.

What is the application process?
Applications should be submitted in writing, by post, and should include a CV, supporting evidence of any previous relevant experience and a covering letter setting out the applicant’s reasons for wishing to pursue this training opportunity. Applicants must confirm that they have the support of their PhD supervisor, and should state preferred dates for their placements, which should be between May 2016 and December 2018.
Please address all applications to Dr Chris Smith, The Naked Scientists, Sub-Department of Animal Behaviour, High Street, Madingley, Cambridge, CB23 8AA.
When is the closing date?
The closing date for this call is 29th of February 2016. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview in March 2016.
