Postdoctoral Research Position - Developing and Maintaining UX Competencies
Purdue Polytechnic Institute
Purdue University

We are seeking a full time postdoctoral researcher to work with Dr. Colin Gray and Dr. Robin Adams at Purdue University. In this project, we are studying how practitioners in user experience (UX) design, interaction design, and related human-centered design disciplines build and maintain their competence over time through online professional communities. The postdoctoral researcher on this project will carry out original research on professional communities of UX practitioners across a variety of social media platforms, building a corpus of data and assisting in the development of analytic tools to develop insights for researchers in human-computer interaction, computer-supported cooperative work, social informatics, and education. This position is expected to begin in Fall 2016 with an approximate salary of $50,000 per year. Two years of funding are available given satisfactory performance assessed biyearly.

To apply, send a cover letter that includes relevant experience, interests, and goals, a current CV, a writing sample, and list of at least three references to Dr. Colin Gray with the subject line “UX Competencies Project – Postdoc Application.” Review of applications will begin on March 25, 2016, and finalists may be invited for a Skype interview or on campus for a formal interview.

Postdoctoral Candidate Requirements

The ideal candidate for this position will have earned a PhD in human-computer interaction, information science, engineering education, instructional technology, sociology, or related fields by August 2016. Applications from candidates with a PhD in computer science or other technical fields are welcomed if they have engaged in substantial social science research.

The postdoctoral researcher must be able to design and conduct research studies using qualitative and quantitative methods, and be familiar with sociotechnical research. Candidates with experience and interest in studying social media communities, design practice, design expertise, or user experience are especially encouraged to apply. Technical skills that will aid in the management and analysis of large datasets are strongly encouraged; familiarity with social media APIs, information visualization, and relevant programming skills to extract insights from complex data sources would be especially helpful. Professional skills such as effective time management, the ability to work collaboratively in inter/trans-disciplinary environments, and excellent communication skills (verbal, written, visual) are also highly valued.
