Agree, I think most of us would make a more comprehensive psychosocial assessment and use experience, judgement, sometimes assessment tools if appropriate (I quite like the PHQ-9 as a progress tool for example) and as one psychiatrist once said to me ‘if it doesn’t feel right then it probably isn’t’ but I do get concerned about the use of assessment tools that have not been validated.

I think you have to be very careful using assessment scales to predict suicide intent, many are not valid as the following link and NICE state http://patient.info/doctor/Suicide-Risk-Assessment-and-Threats-of-Suicide

 

I have read research that suggests that suicidal thoughts and planning are not necessarily a good indicator of a risk, there are many other risk factors to consider.

 

I would ask the question about whether the one in the OH magazine is validated before use.
