I would really recommend those of you who have great examples of caseload and small team continuity schemes to contact Rupa Chilvers at the RCM UK. She is leading their 'Better Births' initiative - and one of their key approaches is to provide resources to those seeking to establish continuity systems.  I would have thought that, as well as seeking to publish a paper  it would be fantastic if Rupa could help coordinate a series of short films or gather your case study stories that could then be easily accessed on the RCM Better Births website.

We are currently in the midst of our maternity review in Scotland and I have no doubt that continuity of carer is going to be a key area.  I know that midwives here will need lots of real life examples from midwives talking about how it feels to be a caseload midwife, how you maintain a work/life balance, job satisfaction, what an off duty looks like and stories that illustrate the positive impact on women (and families).  I think short films are really effective in getting those kind of messages across - Tracy Cooper (Consultant midwife in the NW of England) recently made a short film in the midwife led units in the area she works in - with midwives and families talking about their experiences and it is really powerful.

 

I absolutely agree with Soo's perspective that we don't let the £3000 become The Story of what should and could be a very positive development for women and maternity services.

This looks fabulous. Could we put together a serial publication which we all show how pockets of great practice has influenced choices? As well as increased homebirth we saw a significant increase in normality and waterbirths and a significant decrease in medical births and epidurals.

Only problem with conferences is I can't afford to attend!

I have spoke to HoM's at networking events but I think I need a more constructive way of approaching them, obviously meeting them and discussing how to implement practice is a good way to get things going, but it would take time and money to go around the country meeting them.

I defiantly need to publish in a more widely read journal!

Bev,

 

This sounds fantastic!  My initial thoughts were loud and clear you need to publish!  As well as keep an eye for midwifery conference submit an abstract so you can present your findings/experience (RCM deadline is mid March).  Ring up local HOM's/consultant midwives/SOM's and offer to do presentations on your work. In essence, throw yourself out there!  You sound as though you have a lot to offer, with timely information given the review findings.

 

But yes, you do need to publish in widely accessed journal imho.

I am having a bit of a rant really but wanted some advice on what to do, who to speak to about the midwifery experience I have.

In 2008 myself and two colleagues, with managerial support, set up a homebirth team within the NHS. However with new management it was withdrawn in 2011. We were very successful, we increased the home birth rate from less than 1% to 5-6% with a requested home birth rate of 10%. I am happy to input into research looking at the effectiveness of this but don't know how to go about it.

 

So, advice, how can I help implement these review findings?? What can I do??
