Subject: Digital Badge for BSW2016 and other news

Hi,

It seems like a long time ago since we all met at the Dana Studio in November to discuss exciting ideas and partnerships for British Science Week. I've been working hard to move some of the things forward from the meeting, and with just under a month to go ‘til the week kicks off, I wanted to update you on where all the exciting plans have ended up:

Digital badges

After a keen response to the 'BSW digital badge' idea, I've been working with Makewav.es to develop a suit of badges now available at www.makewav.es/britishscienceweek:

·        Participator: Recognises any BSW participation eg watching a demo/show/assembly or going on a schools trip

·        Creator: For students who make/invent/design or investigate something during the week

·        Champion: When students have done lots of different BSW activities

·        Arts Collaborator: if their BSW work has mixed up science with the Arts/culture in some way.

Any schools you are engaging with during the week can sign up to the badges. At the end of this email, I'm adding a step by step guide that you can copy and paste/ tweak and send out to schools. Feel free to advertise your sessions/activity with reference to the badges and do encourage teachers to sign up.

We’ll be adding examples and encouragements on the badge sites over the next month or so- so if you want me to highlight work done by your students/schools once they’ve uploaded it, let me know.

Any questions, give me (or makewav.es) a shout. We are also working on an 'educator' badge which should be live shortly for teachers/informal/home educators to apply for.

Flagship events

We've chosen a few events over the 10 days to be 'education flagships'. They range from a STEM day around an immersive artwork on the birth of stars with FACT in Liverpool, to a 'behind the scenes' experience at Loreal making scientifically accurate (and legal) adverts as well as event run by Electric Voice Theatre who came along to the November meeting. If you have ideas for exciting and inspiring events we could support next year, let me know. The planning cycle for 2017 starts pretty much as soon as BSW2016 is finished!

As ever- if you are running events or school sessions throughout the week, don’t forget to register them on our website: www.britishscienceweek.org

Enjoy British Science Week 2016 everyone!

Maria
