NIHR Research Methods Internship (8 weeks starting June or July 2016)

Salary: £12.39 per hour plus £2.25 holiday pay

 

The Test Evaluation Research Group (TERG) is based within the Institute of Applied Health Research at the University of Birmingham. TERG has primary and secondary applied health research projects on a wide range of clinical topics as well as methodology research programmes. The international base for organising methodological peer review and editorial approval for publication of Cochrane diagnostic test accuracy protocols and reviews is located within TERG. TERG is multidisciplinary including epidemiologists, clinicians, statisticians and other methodologists.

 

This internship funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Research Methods Programme is aimed at individuals interested in a career in medical statistics. The internship would suit a 2nd or 3rd year undergraduate student studying a related subject such as mathematics, statistics, economics, physics or another academic area which contains a substantial quantitative component.

 

The successful candidate will gain broad experience of applied health research and methodology projects under the supervision of an NIHR Research Methods Fellow (Dr Chris Partlett) and a senior statistician (Dr Yemisi Takwoingi). Overall leadership will be provided by Professor Jon Deeks (TERG Director and NIHR Senior Investigator). The intern will mainly be involved in a research project within our programme on methods for meta-analysis but will also:

 

·         Conduct secondary analyses of a large diagnostic accuracy study

·         Engage with various aspects of ongoing systematic reviews of diagnostic accuracy on different clinical topics

·         Assist with writing up research for publication

·         Participate in seminars, journal clubs, and project meetings. There will also be an opportunity to attend MEMTAB 2016, our International Methods for Evaluating Medical Tests and Biomarkers Symposium, to be held at University of Birmingham from 19th to 20th July 2016.

 

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the ability to work as part of a team, along with being well organised and having knowledge of statistical software such as WinBUGS, SAS, Stata or R.

 

The post is full time and available for a period of 8 weeks between June and August 2016, although specific dates can be agreed with the successful candidate.
