If the student can continue, you could apply to SFE for additional funding or an extension to dates the student is allowed to use their DSA

We did not give extensions on the grounds of dyslexia partly because of the knock on effect as the dissertation is submitted immediately before the exams….. and partly because we felt that since the student had already had over 6 months to carry out the project they could have prioritised in within that time.

Now we have a policy of no extensions for anyone – we ask they submit a mitigating circumstance form with a limited range of acceptable instances, dyslexia not being one

Hi,

We would not consider an extension for a student with dyslexia, unless there were exceptional circumstances, for instance where it had been impossible to put support in place (specialist tutoring) in time to support assessments.  Our disability related ECs are based on ‘acute episodes’ which dyslexia cannot have.

Obviously if there are other reasons for an EC, evidence could be obtained and the usual process followed.

Dear all,

 

We have had an increasing number of dyslexic students requesting extensions for their dissertations, with their dyslexia tutors writing to me to recommend this. As an institution we do not ordinarily offer extensions on coursework to students with dyslexia as default as due to the assessment structure here it would have a knock on effect on other work. We did give one such student an extended deadline as his dyslexia has been deemed quite severe, but I now feel we should offer it to all if we are to treat everyone the same.

 

What do others think of this and what guidance can you offer in these instances as to what happens at other institutions? If a dyslexia tutor recommends an extension, should this be enough to warrant giving one?
