We are pleased to welcome the University of Kentucky's new online graduate classes in open source web mapping and  encourage participation from all interested. The Department of Geography at the University of Kentucky  offers bachelor, masters and doctorate degrees. It is great to see them expanding thier curriculum in geographic information systems (GIS) and digital mapping led by a number of internationally prominent scholars and have developed these Graduate Certificate and Master of Science degree programs in digital mapping with all levels of experience in mind.

I also see good synergies with the OpenCitySmart ideas as the New Maps Plus curriculum provides a less costly alternative by using open source GIS applications to provide a work flow to publish powerful maps online without the restrictions or limitations of licenses. The biggest bonus is that publishing new dynamic maps using open source solutions can help increased engagement with city mapping products and information without the added cost of licenses. The New Maps Plus program can help liberate your maps for the greater public good. With mapping jobs, such as in local government, expected to grow faster than the average compared to other occupations, this program will keep you on top of the emerging wave of mapping technology.

We congratulate all excellent  staff at the University of Kentucky who are leading this excellent online program. This is also another good example of the rapid developments in Internationalization of Higher Education - Creative Initiatives, Critical Thinking, Educational Standard in Geospatial .

Subject: [OSGeo-Discuss] New Maps Plus online graduate classes in open source web mapping – apply by March 27

Hello:
Are you interested in web mapping? Check out the online graduate program in Digital Mapping at the University of Kentucky - we can help take your GIS career to the next level. While there are a full range of courses, we recommend experienced GIS professionals begin with MAP 672 – Programming for Web Mapping.
We will also be offering MAP 671 – Intro to New Mapping (focusing on an open source desktop GIS workflow for web production) as well as MAP 672 – Programming for Web Mapping. MAP 672 introduces students to JavaScript, HTML and CSS and is perfect for those who have work experience in desktop GIS, but have not yet begun web mapping.  If this describes you, please email us so we can review your experience and consider an advanced enrollment.
All of these courses are offered completely online and are part of the New Maps Plus graduate certificate (11 credits) and lay the groundwork for the Master’s of Science (30 credits) in digital mapping at the University of Kentucky.  More details are available at the program’s webpage or Facebook page.
Designed with all levels of experience in mind, the New Maps Plus program at the University of Kentucky offers an unparalleled online learning experience. Applications for the session beginning April 10th are due March 27, 2016. Please contact us with any questions or suggestions.
 Best,
