2nd Call for Papers: RGS 2016 The sustainability of smart cities: visions, politics and practices Federico Cugurullo – University of Manchester James Evans – University of Manchester In recent years, the concept of smart city has become increasingly influential in shaping the way policy-makers from across the world understand and practice urban sustainability. Yet, despite numerous studies, this new global model of city-making is still covered by a veil of mystery, particularly with regards to the way alleged smart cities are implemented and function, and the extent to which they are capable of being sustainable from an environmental, social and economic perspective. This session adds empirical and theoretical richness to the understanding of smart urbanism, by empirically and theoretically examining examples of smart-city projects, specifically in relation to their sustainability. Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following: Environmental impact of smart cities Distribution of environmental burdens and benefits in smart-city projects Smart cities’ supply chains Economic costs and benefits of the smart city Green architecture and urban design in smart-city initiatives Understandings of sustainability in smart-city projects Energy and the smart city Future visions of sustainability in the smart city Discourses of smart sustainability in different geographical contexts and amongst different urban stakeholders The role of smart technology in delivering new forms or enabling new approaches to sustainability The relationship between smart technology and smart communities in delivering sustainability.
