*Improving the lives of women and girls in the criminal justice system –
what works?*



The Hallam Centre for Community Justice at Sheffield Hallam University is
marking International Women’s Day <http://www.internationalwomensday.com/>
on the 8th March 2016 by holding a conference in Sheffield on* Improving
the lives of women and girls in the criminal justice system – what works?*



This conference is part of our 2016 Research into Practice Conference and
Seminar Series, which presents research evidence to inform better criminal
justice policy and practice, bringing together policy makers,
practitioners, researchers and students as both audience and speakers.



We are pleased to announce that our confirmed speakers are:



·         Keynote speaker: Vicky Pryce – Economist and author of
*Prisonomics* – Vicky’s 2013  book looks at how prisons work and should
work based on her personal experience of prison and her professional
expertise as an economist.

·         Professor Loraine Gelsthorpe – Director of the Centre for
Community, Gender and Social Justice, University of Cambridge, with a
distinguished record of research into women offenders including the 2009
review of “What works with women offenders”.

·         Caroline O’ Keeffe – Senior Research Manager at the Hallam Centre
for Community Justice, Sheffield Hallam University, with an extensive
record of research into women offenders, including female peer research
projects and research director for the evaluation of the Greater Manchester
Whole System Approach to Women Offenders.

·         Dr Gilly Sharpe – Lecturer at the School of Law, University of
Sheffield and the author of “Offending girls: Young women and youth
justice” with research interests in youth justice policy and the transition
to adulthood.

·         Jackie Lowthian – Director of Social Justice Solutions with a
long record of working with women offenders as: a practitioner, a former
Director of Nacro and as a consultant and researcher.

·         Linda Meadows – Senior Research Manager at the Hallam Centre for
Community Justice, Sheffield Hallam University, and author of a 2014
literature review into gender based offender behaviour programmes and
extensive experience of criminal justice research.



The topics covered by this conference will include:



·         An overview of the evidence base for what works with women
offenders

·         Findings from the evaluation of the whole system approach to
women offenders in Greater Manchester

·         What works with girls in the criminal justice system

·         Enhancing care for childbearing women in prison

·         Women-specific offending behavioural programmes
