Closing Date: Sunday 28th February. Applications via Coventry University's website.

This full-time academic post is based in sigma, Coventry University’s central team that provides mathematics and statistics support to students from all faculties as well as to staff and postgraduates engaged in research. The person appointed would join the two statisticians currently in sigma, who spend part of their time as statistics lecturers in the School of Computing, Electronics and Mathematics in the Faculty of Engineering, Environment and Computing. In addition to the main statistics support role, the appointee would also be expected to pursue original research in an area of theoretical or applied statistics and, on an occasional basis, to contribute to the teaching of statistics in the Faculty.

The Mathematics Support Centre (MSC) and the Statistics Advisory Service (SAS) are sigma’s most important responsibilities. The Support Centre, strategically situated in the University Library, is typically open 40 hours a week and deals with over 10,000 student visits a year.  The Statistics Service, which is led by Professor Tim Sparks, has four main strings to its teaching bow: (1) regular time-slots in the MSC when students can drop in without an appointment for statistics advice; (2) hour-long appointments for either undergraduate and postgraduate students working on projects and theses or university staff undertaking research; (3) statistics workshops on wide-ranging topics from SPSS training to multiple regression for staff as well as students; (4) occasional training on topics such as numerical reasoning and the use of Excel.

In addition to front-line teaching, which is mainly one-to-one, sigma staff also: provide online support and training; offer consultancy for University research bids and projects; create teaching and learning resources; promote their services across campus through personal contact and interest groups; contribute to the national network for mathematics and statistics support (also called sigma).

It is hoped to appoint a statistician whose academic background, knowledge and interests cover a broad range of subjects, but whose specialisms complement those of the current staff.  In this context, expertise in (for example) the area of Economics, Business or Finance statistics could be an advantage, as well as familiarity with the statistics software R, Minitab and SPSS. Above all, applicants should have a genuine vocation for teaching, a desire to help, an ability to communicate well at many levels, and a willingness to go the extra mile.
