NIHR Research Methods Internship (12 weeks – June to August 2016)

Faculty of Health, Research Institute for Primary Care and Health Sciences (iPCHS),
Keele University
Salary: £7.43 per hour plus holiday entitlement

The Research Institute for Primary Care and Health Sciences (iPCHS) at Keele University has thriving research programmes in musculoskeletal conditions and mental health, underpinned by high quality observational studies and clinical trials with linkage to medical records. The iPCHS includes a multidisciplinary grouping of clinicians working alongside epidemiologists, statisticians and social scientists, and our funding framework gives us a strong remit to increase research capacity by providing training opportunities and career support for early experience researchers.

The iPCHS has successfully secured a 12-week NIHR Research Methods Internship.  The ideal candidate will be an undergraduate studying mathematics or statistics, however undergraduates from other fields with a large statistical component in their degree will be considered (e.g. physics, economics).  Applicants will be in their penultimate year of their degree programme, be able to work well with others from other backgrounds, and have a high standard of written and communicable English.

The successful candidate will gain experience of working as a medical statistician in our internationally recognised research institute, gaining invaluable experience working on applied health research. During the intern’s time in the iPCHS they will undertake their own research project analysing anonymised survey and/or medical record data from one of our high quality research studies, and attend seminars, journal clubs, and project meetings hosted by the institute. There will also be the opportunity to attend a conference related to our research.

The NIHR Research Methods Fellow will provide day-to-day support, with a Professor of Biostatistics providing senior oversight.  The post-holder will be based on the University campus on a daily basis (Monday – Friday) for the duration of the Internship.
