 Salary: £32,600 to £37,768 per annum (pro rata if part time).
These are fixed term positions until 28th February 2018 in the first
instance with the possibility of extension beyond this (dependent on grant
funding). Main Purpose of the Post

Applicants are invited for the positions of fixed term Research Officer
specialising in data mining/ machine learning/ statistics to conduct
research on data linkage and analytics for examining cancer, diabetes,
arthritis, obesity, mental health and other chronic conditions, given large
routine electronic health records (electronic hospital admissions, general
practitioner data, emergence data etc.).

The post-holder(s) will develop methods of predictive analytics,
biostatistics and design to identify specific diagnosis using routine
diagnosis codes, medication and laboratory test results. This work will
heavily involve data linkage, which brings together person-level data drawn
from operational and national systems and use a novel anonymisation process
to link datasets together and form a rich information base. Data sources
are not restricted to health and include many other settings, including
social services, housing, transport, and education.

This work will be undertaken within the Farr Institute CIPHER. Led by
Swansea University, the Farr Institute CIPHER is one of the four component
Centres of the UK’s Farr Institute of Health Informatics Research. The
post-holder will work closely with the existing team in Swansea
University’s Health Information Research Unit (HIRU), which develops and
operates the Secure Anonymous Information Linkage (SAIL) databank.

The post-holders are expected to be highly self-motivated, capable and
enthusiastic to develop their own research interests in the area of
statistics and data mining with good knowledge of data mining, machine
learning or other predictive analytics and willing to develop their own
interests in applying predictive methods to health informatics. The
post-holder is expected to publish in high quality world leading journals,
apply for funding and grants and disseminate findings at national and
international conferences and meetings. In addition, the post-holder should
be willing to strengthen existing research groups and lead in the
establishment of collaboration with others for international and national
research.

Applicants should have: a PhD in statistics, computing or a related
subject; excellent data analysis skills; and a track record of producing
findings for publications.
