Dear SPM blog,

We currently have vacancies for talented students to join us here in Cape Town for Masters and doctoral level studies:

Position for postgraduate level students at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences,

Stellenbosch University

Positions for master’s and/or doctoral level students are available at the SU/UCT MRC Unit on Anxiety & Stress Disorders, Department of Psychiatry, at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of Stellenbosch University (SU).  The position involves work on a collaborative psychiatric genetics and brain imaging project between this Unit, the Division of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics, and the Cape Universities Brain Imaging Centre (CUBIC).

Research examining the related phenomena of impulsivity and compulsivity across disorders is relatively scant.  Here we are examining the proposed endophenotypes further by focusing on a range of psychiatric disorders with apparent compulsive / impulsive features.  The project entails a comprehensive collaborative study by researchers at SU and Cape Town (UCT) using clinical and neurocognitive assessments, genotyping procedures, and neuroimaging sequences to investigate the related phenomena of impulsivity and compulsivity across disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, substance (i.e. methamphetamine) use disorder or gambling disorder.

The candidate(-s)’s activities will be determined by his/her academic background, experience and interests (i.e. clinical / genetics / brain imaging).

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, SU is situated 20 minutes’ drive from central Cape Town and 30 minutes from Stellenbosch campus.  Tygerberg and its surrounding areas offer excellent quality of life and easy access to the city and the countryside.  This area is well-known for its beautiful mountains, beaches, and winelands.

Applicants should have a related Honours / Master’s-degree and a strong background in psychology / psychiatry / molecular biology / brain imaging.  Previous experience of patient assessment and/or genotyping and gene expression in humans and/or brain imaging is essential.
