PhD Studentships (4) in Astrophysics at the University of Hull

As part of an ambitious investment strategy leading up to the City of
Hull's 2017 City of Culture award, the newly established E.A. Milne
Centre for Astrophysics is pleased to announce the availability
of 4 fully-funded UK/EU PhD studentships, for entry in Sept 2016.

The Milne Centre is a dynamic and supportive environment, hosting
both the 2016 STFC Introductory Summer School and the 2017
National Astronomy Meeting. The 4 students will play leading roles
in coordinating these events, and enjoy access to one of the country's
most powerful High Performance Computing Facilities.

The 4 studentships form the basis of the Milne Centre's "Origins
Cluster", which has also seen the appointment of 8 staff and 6 PhD
students over the past 18 months. Parallel investment in
additional postdoctoral appointments accompany this current call.

Detailed project descriptions can be found under "Origins: From the
Sub-Atomic to Clusters of Galaxies" at http://www.hull.ac.uk/phd, and
include:

1. Star Formation in Cluster Galaxies (Roediger & Gibson)
2. The Cosmic Distance Ladder (Pimbblet)
3. Artificial Stars and Stellar Nucleosynthesis (Pignatari & Gibson)
4. Extreme Solar Flares (Zharkov & Chongchitnan).

The deadline for applications is 29th February 2016.

Questions regarding our opportunities, work environment, and
committment to diversity, equality, collegiality, and support, will be
happily entertained; please contact Prof Brad Gibson
