Hi Alex,

thanks for this. I'd forgotten you'd compiled this list of writing competitions, great to have a reminder.

It's also helpful to have your experience of blog to spreadsheet!

Best wishes

Helen

Hi Helen and all,

I have a list! It's only for writing competitions, but it might be helpful.

I started with a flat list in a blog post [1] but that quickly became unmanageable, so I made a spreadsheet [2] with some explanatory notes [3].

I made this in late 2013 / early 2014 though, so a lot of it is probably out-of date by now.

I also have several updates in an email archive, largely drawn from tagging emails on PSCI-COM advertising competitions.

At the time, I remember lots of people saying this kind of thing would be useful, and several expressing dismay that it isn't part of someone's official job somewhere like the British Science Association or similar.

The best example I found of something similar is a table of writing competitions for lawyers in America: http://www.nylslawreview.com/writing-contest-database/

I hope this helps!

Alex

Hello again

As there seems to be quite some enthusiasm for this list/calendar (and one doesn't seem to exist) we're going to put one together. Not surprisingly we're going to need your input!

The rather wonderful Siobhan Fairgreaves has volunteered to compile the list and get into a format that works for us. Siobhan's going to look for competitions/prizes etc and put them into a spreadsheet with a range of criteria we might want to sort by (eg career stage, discipline, format, prize, entry format, deadline, opening date etc etc). She'll share work in progress on 1 February - it won't be perfect, but it will be something for us to look at and discuss.

So, if you're aware of a prize/competition etc that you think should be included or you want to suggest some sort/filter criteria or offer any other suggestions then please contact Siobhan directly on s[log in to unmask].

We look forward to having your input and getting this together for everyone!

Best wishes and happy weekends everyone

Helen

Ed's approach makes most sense.

Create it as a Google calendar and then BSA, NCCPE, TWYNHO and this list can all share the link.

Perhaps more importantly Helen et al can allow other to add entries to the calendar without needing NCCPE to do so.

If I can volunteer a host that hasn't already throw its hat into the ring, I would have thought that the British Science Association would reach a wider active audience of PESTs than most organisations.

It runs all the way through from the media to schools, and their interest in the festival, with plenty of others in between these extremes.

The NCCPE is a new one to me.

Hi all

I’m with Alice: If it was schools or teachers I’d say the opposite, but on this occasion, and lovely though the Schoolscience website is, the target audience in this case

are likely to be more familiar with the NCCPE website.

Hello again

Thanks to everyone who’s replied on and off list. It seems there’s quite a lot of support for having some sort of central calendar of awards/competitions. I’ve had an offer of support to help compile the list, which is wonderful.

Two people have also offered to host. Rebecca’s School Science – but I think there is a general feeling that a list of PE/Sci Com competitions isn’t quite right for the School Science website.  The National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement have also said they can host a list. I’m inclined to go with the NCCPE as it feels like a central place that most people in the sector will be aware of – what do people think?

All the best
Helen

Dear all,

I do agree with Bella on that. As undergraduate students, I feel the list might be too school-focused. I find this "list project" a very exciting one and I am looking forward to seeing more of it, as I am one of the students always on the lookout for such experiences (which are sadly not widely advertised in universities). Moreover, I do believe Under-, Postgrad students and professionals will definitely benefit from this list. Unfortunately I cannot advice on anything, but I am grateful someone is doing it!

Kind regards,

Paolo M. Arru

This list seems very schools-focussed and I am not sure how many sci-comm / science professionals would access it to find out about awards and events available to them? It would be really useful to have all of this in one place.

Hi Rebecca

Sorry, I didn't mean to not acknowledge your list. I had a quick look, but it looked as if it was mostly science competitions, rather science communication/public engagement competitions.

It's great that you're able to add these competitions to your list. Would the inclusion of engagement/communication competitions/prizes skew your list too much?

Helen

Yes one does exist on schoolscience.co.uk - I'm unsure as to whether my earlier reply was received..?

I do one already.

If your competition or event does not appear, then please do send me details and i'll gladly add to the site.

Thanks also for everyone's comments/offers of support for creating a calendar. It seems that one doesn't exist right now.

I agree that we need something that everyone can contribute to. What information would we want included?

name of the competition/prize/awards

deadline date

opening date

organisation

prize (eg cash, recognition, title...)

Submission requirements

Cheers

Helen
