Somewhat relevant here is the 9th-century Faddan More Psalter discovered in an Irish bog in 2006, though there is no explanation whether it was put there with purpose or accidentally lost.

Here's a thought. A lot of the archaeological finds for Celtic and pre-Celtic materials occur at "wet sites." I remember reading about this as an undergrad (back when it was considered current events rather than history)--that there was a Celtic practice of taking metal goods, bending or breaking them, and then depositing them into a river or bog or something. Since books would have a certain holiness about them, there could be a connection.

And the Book of Durrow, put in cows' water so the cows could drink it and be blessed.

I am not in a position to check this right now, but didn’t the Lindisfarne Gospels end up falling in a river?

And again.

I am encouraging said friend-of-a colleague (met via #twitterstorians) to join this list. Where we would be without it I don't know.

Dear Maddy,

Richard Gameson mentions a few examples in his chapter in Lesley Smith and Jane H. M. Taylor, eds, Women and the Book: Assessing the Visual Evidence.  As well as St Columba, he lists Symeon of Durham's account of a gospel book falling from the ship carrying St Cuthbert's body to Ireland, and books being thrown into the sea to decide between rival religions in Muirchu's 7th c. Life of St Patrick.

Best,

Katherine

A friend of a colleague is working on the vitae of St Margaret of Scotland. She's come across the topos of the saint's book falling in the water and being miraculously rescued and is exploring other accounts of saints who had books that were dropped in water, or that got wet and were then saved by divine intervention. She has come across Aidan, Ninian and Columba and I have pointed her towards St Barrwg. Does anyone have any other stories of books being lost or rescued?
